- if you can move on from Unity you should. Just cus they've proven themselves iffy and closed source limits your options.
- Unreal is fine if you like it. It has source. Worst case you branch off.
- Don't bare metal your own tech. Start with Godot. Saves ya time.

What do you see being the most beneficial?
My manifesto is "Things aren't as bad as they seem, despite the fact that people aren't as good as they seem."

I'm not trying to be super dour tonight, but these jobs are not coming back anytime soon. We're years and years away from a major rebound. Plan accordingly. Hold out hope, don't give up, but no shame in work outside the industry to stay afloat. Whatever your rainy day plan is, it's fucking pouring.

The work that inspired Great Games Need Great Leaders really came out of my Masters, where I interviewed leaders from the games industry to get a better picture of what good, sustainable leadership looks like. And despite our present circumstances, it gives me hope for the future of our industry.

Its worth noting that coverage of games industry layoffs has slowed significantly - This is definitely NOT because layoffs have slowed!
It seems more likely that its due to the layoffs have extended to those covering industry news.
Its so hard to keep this up to date lately.
A snippet from the chapter on Culture in Great Games Need Great Leaders: Multiclassing to Lead Game Development Teams. It reads: "The idea that culture is some sort of magical problem-solving entity is a misconception at the heart of most game development studios, not just Valve. It is this idea that we can simply dictate what our culture is by writing it down on paper. That saying what matters is the same as exemplifying those ideals. Many studios go out of their way to highlight the things that they do for their teams, and the culture they create through their spending: fully stocked fridges, after-hours meals, a gym, family days. But culture doesnโt come from pizza parties, bean bags, or putting wheels on desks."
Possibly my favourite chapter to write of Great Games Need Great Leaders was about Culture, told through the lens of Valve's flat studio structure and wheeled desks that are specifically noted in their employee handbook.
