@flophousepodcast.bsky.social Is there any chance that we chronic procrastinators who waited til the 11th hour could still buy a season pass for FlopTV season 2 before the Sat deadline? I'm seeing a "No future event times" message on the link 😬

The Great Michigan Pizza Funeral was the ceremonial disposal of 29,188 frozen cheese-and-mushroom pizzas in Ossineke, Michigan, on March 5, 1973.[1][2] The manufacturer, Ilario "Mario" Fabbrini,[3] had been ordered to recall the pizzas by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after initial tests suggested the presence of botulism-causing bacteria in a batch of canned mushrooms.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

β€œTo Us” a toast to the resilient animation industry.

I was thinking about my friends, colleagues, and union kin, made this in a couple hours to show my appreciation to them. We are Hollywood. Hang in there.

I don’t care if you’re a relative, a fantasy novelist, or an elected official, transphobia is manufactured outrage and transphobe are trash.

None of America’s problems are cause by trans people. None.

But a LOT are caused by bigots.

It is *very* important to understand that Jews were never the only target of the 1930s Nazis and they are not the only targets of today’s Nazis. A Nazi salute is not only antisemitic. It is also racist, ableist, and queerphobic.

TLDR: There is nothing enforceable for the immediate future. It will take months or years to implement this via rulemaking or bureaucratic changes which are then subject to legal challenge. While it's worrying, there's no immediate change yet for most trans people. Do not comply in advance.

That guilt you feel about not being able to support every GoFundMe for folks who are suffering?

That’s actually rage at a corrupt system refusing to support its people - a rage carefully steered away from the system so you struggle with yourself & not with the institutions that deserve it

In 2024, several New Hampshire Democrats, afraid that anti-trans attacks would work, voted in favor of a trans surgery ban and bathroom bill.

They lost more seats than most other states. Now the R majority is ramping up targeting us.

Capitulation didn't work.

National Dems, take note.

I want to remind anyone who’s upset about the language of the MOA that our Negotiations team fought tooth and nail for what you see in front of you.

Please direct any anger you may have at the AMPTP. Negotiations are a two way street, and if they don’t budge, we can only do so much.

This is something I know from research most people don't understand--the estrogen I take every morning isn't any different than the estrogen countless cis women take every morning. It's not a radical field of medicine; it's a very common medicine being banned for trans people and trans people only.
