It is likely that 2025 will be the warmest year on record for the UK.
Why does this matter?
Burning fossil fuels is warming the planet, including the UK, causing heatwaves to get hotter. For Central England this is happening 2x faster than the mean change.

A damaging windstorm today will contribute to Extremely Critical fire weather conditions. Wind gusts up to 100mph, temperatures near 70F, and relative humidity near 10% will yield high-end fire weather environment along/near the Front Range. Stay aware& follow instructions from emergency officials.
Wildfires can spread quickly — by the time one is nearby, you may not have much time. Have an evacuation plan, and prepare an emergency supply kit ahead of time. Listen to local officials for emergency information and any evacuation orders.
Here is the latest storm summary for the Western U.S. and northern Plains high wind/blizzard event. Wind gusts exceeding 100 mph were reported in Colorado and Wyoming: www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/...

2025 is on course to be joint-second warmest year.
The #C3S Climate Bulletin reports that November was 1.54°C above pre-industrial levels, making it the third-warmest November on record. The 2023–2025 average is likely to be the first three-year average exceeding 1.5°C.

It's hard to get a more symmetric and well-defined hurricane structure than the latest satellite images of Melissa.
One of the most intense storms the Atlantic has ever seen and unfortunately, just at the landfall.
892 mb and 185 mph. Very few places in the world in modern history have ever experienced what Jamaica is experiencing right now. Hurricanes of this magnitude directly hitting a major land mass are exceptionally rare.

We are 1 week into this project and we are overblown by the amount of data rescued by the volunteers who've taken a few minutes each to contribute. Thanks to @maynoothuniversity.ie for the great promotion!!

The monster eye at the center of a still strengthening Hurricane Melissa.
5pm EDT Oct 27th Key Messages for Category 5 #Hurricane #Melissa:
#Jamaica: Remain in your safe shelter & do not venture outside. Catastrophic, life-threatening flash flooding & numerous landslides through Tuesday as Melissa's core moves ashore. hurricanes.gov
Hurricane #Melissa is a category 4 hurricane expected to make landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday. Forecast shows over 40 inches or 1016mm of rainfall is possible in 4 days. The same as a full year’s rainfall in Ireland. Thoughts with those in her path.
Rainfall warning upgraded to Orange now for Cork with over 60mm for parts of West Cork. Sadly over 140mm is possible on the Cork/Kerry border over high ground so areas like Glengarriff that flooded recently could be hit again.
A request for weather interested volunteers!

Two job opportunities on new @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social contract until 30/06/28. Both looking at aspects of data rescue and preparation and provision of global historical land meteorological data. Looking to fill ASAP. First job is for a senior postdoctoral position: my.corehr.com/pls/nuimrecr...
I’ve recently begun a PhD, part of which is to discover missing historical meteorological observations recorded across Ireland. Meteorological tables contained within the short-lived Dublin Magazine of 1820 were recently found. The observations were taken by a J. Pim at 55 City Quay, Dublin 1/
Out now! Version 2.0.0 of the Global land surface meteorological observations dataset (1755–present) is available in the #C3S Climate Data Store (CDS). Updated in situ coverage thru 2024 plus enhanced and consolidated data from worldwide sources. 🔗 cds.climate.copernicus.eu/datasets/ins...

First of the high resolution weather models to cover the possible storm Friday keeps the strongest winds out to the Northwest of Ireland. Hopefully this becomes a trend. A lot of rain to come though!
Met Eireann warnings will presumably drop any time now. Still a way off and this is more uncertain than the usual being a post-tropical cyclone but if this ECMWF forecast verifies the norther half of the country is in for a rough old Friday afternoon and evening
The Council’s Annual Review of Adaptation has been published today with key observations and policy recommendations published to help Ireland deal with the impacts of future climate change.
