This Great Blue Heron took a break from fishing in a small pond (where the heron was catching tiny fish) to perch in an Eastern Red Cedar.

Got a unique challenge. I'd love input from people who are familiar with the plant life of Puerto Rico & the horticulture trade.

I've been volunteering with a park group, adding more native plants in specific areas of the park.

We're about to refurb planters, which are concrete & get hot as hell.

The difference between the various kinds
consists in the time they take to ripen-the early kind ripens in 60 days-and also in their size.
Ulpicum also comes in this class, the plant called by the Greeks Cyprian garlic, or by others antiscorodon; it holds a high rank among the dishes of the country people, particularly in Africa, and it is larger than garlic; when beaten up in oil and vinegar it swells up in foam to a surprising size.

pliny the elder DID mention aioli in his historia naturalis! i found the quote!!! his contemporary columella also mentions beating garlic and oil with a pestle but suggests administering it via nostril to those afflicted with tongue distemper, so im discounting that. for ONCE a primary source!!!!

A bunny with a piece of buttered toast in its mouth hops on all fours down a footpath in a city. Rounding a corner, it is about to crash into a different bunny, also in a hurry.

Cylindrical clay cylinder, tapered and flat on each end, covered with cuneiform writing. It's a 'toasty' color, yellows and browns, and a bit chipped here and there.

"I built a strong wall that cannot be shaken, with bitumen and baked bricks... I laid its foundation on the breast of the netherworld, and I built its top as high as a mountain." - Nebuchadnezzar II

So says this Babylonian clay cylinder (604-562 BCE), inscribed with cuneiform. 🏺 1/

Boy it sure is fun having that ancient human gene where you're beyond physically exhausted but your mind won't shut up so you stay awake *longer* because that'll help keep you safe from lions, bears, and cannibals.

I am so tired 😭

‘Hey’ came before ‘hi,’ and ‘hi' came before ‘hello.’

‘Hi’ is most likely a variant of ‘hey.’

‘Hello’ is not related to either.

Goodbye.

Scientific Shot of a Peacock mantis shrimp eyes which are the most advanced in the animal world. Photo by Daniel Sasse.

the mantis shrimp has 16 types of color receptors.

humans have 3.

we see roughly 10 million colors and think that's impressive.

the mantis shrimp is sitting there processing a visual reality so hyperchromatic that scientists genuinely aren't sure what it's like to be one.

Terracotta statuette of a dog with upright, pricked ears and a fluffy upright tail. He has an oval object - supposedly meat - in his mouth, painted red. Black pigment can still be seen on his ears and the tip of his tail, in addition to some traces of red on his coat.

Every dog owner: ‘What’s that in your mouth?? Omigod, drop it, drop it!’ 😱

This Greek (Boeotian) terracotta dog appears to have a red piece of, um, meat in its mouth. I’m sure he earned it (‘Hey, that dead guy over there wasn’t using this.’)

Did you know that snails have teeth 😂 I didn't

nails have teeth. Between 1,000 and 12,000 teeth, to be precise. They aren’t like ours, though, so don’t be thinking about snails with ridiculous toothy grins. You’ll find the snail's tiny 'teeth' all over its file-like tongue.
