I’m hiring for a Lead Designer in the GOV.UK AI team. It’s my old job, and it’s great fun. Come lead a small group of designers working on GOV.UK Chat and other applications of AI that transform how people in the UK interact with the state 🏄♂️

Blog post from @timpaul.co.uk and Helena Trippe at GDS, exploring what the ideas in the 'Blueprint for modern digital government' might look and behave like "when they inevitably bump up against the rough edges of the real world"...

04.01.2025 16:30 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I haven’t read the act or the guidance, but even if it has been incorrectly interpreted by LFGSS then it’s a poor piece of legislation / because it shouldn’t put things like LFGSS at risk. one of the best corners of the internet there is.
16.12.2024 21:11 — 👍 4 🔁 2 💬 2 📌 0To conclude a year in which we just cannot stop iterating and shipping, we just put autocomplete on every single GOV.UK page and redesigned the searching experience insidegovuk.blog.gov.uk/2024/12/12/m...
12.12.2024 16:37 — 👍 8 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0We explored and tested a bunch of options for how we describe it, where we put it, and how we integrate it.. There is definitely more work and iteration to do there
02.12.2024 08:56 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Great points, thanks Tom.. Nothing in our data suggesting that those users are more vulnerable so far. It’s not that 1 in 5 didn’t realise, but that 4 in 5 did – subtle but important difference – most of that 20% were unsure so would hopefully still check answers
02.12.2024 08:51 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Nice from @kubabartwicki.bsky.social on the need to re-calibrate the existing brand trust that a user brings to their use of an unreliable chatbot.

This is nice open working from @kubabartwicki.bsky.social and team at GDS on GOVUK chat. Thoughtful reflections on how technology can be used well, and challenges that need solved around accuracy and educaton

Personally, I think that a conversational experience done well* might be able to help people get things done a lot more easily, and could link you to real humans when you need them, but let’s see what people think of this thing first
(* this bit is really hard!)
Our users already use tools like this, so I’m glad that we’re thinking about what it means for us by making and experimenting
