Post by Gravito. Text reads: "Each year on July 8 at 1:15 UTC 99% of the world's population experiences daylight. This day should have a name, and it should be a holiday. Map shows nearly every continent experiencing daylight except for the area where Australia, New Zealand parts of Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, etc. are located

When the sun shines on everyone who should be allowed to play Rugby day?

Iconographic Substitution - a metaphor by another name - charlayn von solms dotcom The elimination of the figure and the development of a metaphoric code of objects, echoing the symbolic function of goods in Homeric poetics

The iconography of my work is based on the elimination of the figure and the development of a metaphoric 'code' of objects. Visual identification by means of objects echoes the symbolic function of material goods in the Homeric epic

Compilation image showing every assemblage sculpture in the series "A Catalogue of Shapes" by Charlayn von Solms. From top left: Kirke, Menelaos, Helena, Odysseus, Penelope, Kalypso. Bottom row from left: Ate, Nestor, Achilleus, Telemachos, Hektor, Eris

This series began with an assemblage sculpture depicting Odysseus. Looking for an object to serve as a metaphor for Homer's iconic hero, I found an old ocean-battered, sun-beaten orange fishing buoy at a flea market. The rest of the sculptures took their cue from there.

Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 370–415 CE), brilliant Greek mathematician, astronomer, and Neoplatonist philosopher—the first woman known to head a major school of learning; she taught advanced mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy, advised civic leaders, and became a symbol of reason and intellectual freedom despite the era's gender and religious barriers.

The black-and-white engraved portrait shows her in profile, facing left, with a serene, contemplative expression; she has an elegant neck, large eyes, and elaborate braided hair styled in a high bun wrapped with a headband, rendered in fine line work with soft shading on a plain background.

Hypatia of Alexandria (d. March 415) was a mathematician, astronomer & philosopher. First woman known to lead a major school of thought. She taught advanced math & #science & defied gender/religious barriers. There have been #WomenInSTEM for millennia.🔭📐

A man walks on the sidewalk with two small dogs in his pockets, while a duck on a leash wears shoes. It is captioned “A man with two dogs in his pockets, walking a duck wearing shoes” on a bar mid-photograph.

You wake up in the morning
With gray clouds overhead
And you struggle for the will
To rise up out of bed
The world outside is frightening
A sad and dismal place
You pray for inspiration
A moment of pure grace
Maybe there’s something out there
To take away these blues
Perhaps

A split-image portrait of Katherine Johnson, the pioneering Black NASA mathematician: On the left, a black-and-white historical photo from her NASA career in the 1960s shows a smiling middle-aged woman wearing cat-eye glasses and a light-colored dress with white collar and trim, seated at her desk with a globe and papers in the background. On the right, a color photo from 2015 depicts an elderly Katherine Johnson (in her late 90s) seated in a wheelchair during the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony, wearing glasses, a dark suit jacket, an orange top, a blue ribbon with the medal, and holding a green item in her lap, as she looks directly at the viewer with a gentle expression. The side-by-side images contrast her youthful professional life with her honored later years.

Mathematician & NASA 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘳 Katherine Johnson died #OTD in 2020.

She was instrumental in the success of the first US manned spaceflights, calculating complex trajectories enabling humans to reach orbit & land on the moon. Her story was told in 𝘏𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘍𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 (book/movie). #WomenInSTEM #BHM

Two panel comic. Panel 1: a museum display of a megalodon jaw fossil, with some museum goers standing around it. There is a graphic on the information tablet next to the fossil, depicting the approximation of the megalodon’s full size compared to a human. Panel 2: “3.6 million years ago:” we see the true megalodon as it existed, a small shark with ludicrously large, juicy lips.
