Q's for those working in #Genealogy #geneticgeneaology or #history fields (or similar) :
- How did you start in this field?
- What courses or schooling helped get into working (beyond a hobby)? Or certain experience?
- Does it pay your bills, partial income (second job), or minimal income?

Are the players no longer singing "stand by me?" with the fans when they win? Or was it just an "oops" last game that they didn't?

Was kind of weird to just be singing it to ourselves in the stands.
Missed having that opportunity to celebrate with the team.

The best way to find an ancestor? Assume every record got their name wrong at least once. #Genealogy

Little mini vacation this weekend that has been a fantastic break from all going on in life and the world. Very needed refresh.
Perfect little Valentines lunch for me and Karen - they gave us a table for two with the view - while the boys went snowboarding. Winter in wine country is lovely.

EncyclopΓ¦dia Britannica will continue to use β€˜Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons:

-We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S.

-The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous.

As a genealogist, family historian and keeper of the past, I am gutted to see the National Archivist Colleen J. Shogan, was fired. No reasoning. No cause. No explanation. It's clear the path being taken and I am beyond disgusted. We must protect the National Archives and the millions of records.

I similarly have Swedish background (very well documented) that often shows in these tests as Norwegian. The ancestral heritage in DNA tests isn't super accurate (borders moving, who has tested, etc).
Interestingly, I also have the Canadian prairies subset too - guessing that's your Swedish side?

I don't think it's fair to say Canada caved.... we were poised to hit back, and in discussion reiterated that we are still doing an investment in our borders (as announced in December, nothing to do with this recent stuff), and Trump "paused" for 30 days.
We also still stopped/paused US contracts

I should note this wasn't Scandinavian or German - it was in Canada (and not Scandinavian or German decent). So it can happen all over the place.

Are you digging in my family tree? That's two in a row!
My GGparents has a daughter Shirley who passed as an infant. Then their eldest son had a daughter that same year and named her Shirley.
Father and Son also had the same name (first, middle and last) so it is VERY confusing in the records.

Oooh, what is full-text search?
Some of my ancestors (Embree) are from Nova Scotia as well, and would love to learn some new ways to find more info (or more detailed info)

I have a whole line of Fanny's and Fannies's (daughters named after mothers) and not one of them has ever had "Francis" on any documents.
Fanny and Fannie are switched around, once or twice Franny shows up, but never Francis.

The worst is budgeting to finally pay for the subscription, because it looks like it has something/someone you are looking for, only to find it actually doesn't have that paper/place/name etc, that it's main page led you to believe was there 🀣

Love finding old newspaper articles - gives a more personal glimpse into who people were, beyond simply names dates and places.
I also hate how many things are behind various subscription pay walls :(
I get it - it takes peoples time to scan/upload/catalog it all.

One difficulty in locating records is the many different places they could be. A family bible was considered a certified source, as many did not register births, or get birth cert. This was the official declaration for my G Grandfathers birth, when he needed proof of age later in life #genealogy

I also wish young me had paid more attention, asked more questions, and written things down, with regards to family stories and history πŸ˜‘

BlueSky #newbie question :
Is there a way to bookmark or save peoples posts?

I am seeing so many posts with articles, links, events etc that I am interested in and would like to come back to later.
So far I've been screencapturing them, but that is far from ideal, lol.

The remains of Rockledge Jane Doe have been undergoing genetic genealogy since 2019, and the DNA Doe Project is now appealing for people with familial links to Anson County, North Carolina to upload their DNA to GEDmatch, Family Tree DNA or DNA Justice. #Genealogy

Would be fantastic to see some double headers!
Will probably be beneficial to both teams - some going for Rise add on the WFC2 game, some going for WFC2 add the Rise game.

I don't ever want to make anyone feel uncomfortable or pressured to talk about something they don't want to.

However, I also want them to know the door is open if they DO want to have a conversation about it or test.

It's sometimes a tricky balance.

This is great advice!

I keep an extra few kits on hand, and when talking of genealogy/family history and DNA I casually mention that I purchased an extra few kits last time they were on sale, and if they ever wanted one let me know (v casually). Then the door is open.

Not at xmas or b-days tho.
