Matt Baume (@mattbaume.bsky.social), you have done it again. This is a magnificent biography and tribute to James Whale. I think you have made a compelling case for why he is one of the greatest of all time. Also, someone needs to make a soundboard of Una O'Connor's screams and shrieks.

My favorite fact about Whale is that he painted and openly displayed a really beautiful nude self-portrait in his home. Whale was fabulously gay.

I know this is so reductive of me to say, but it's meant to be a general observation. I live in a city where the long-serving mayor is a Trumpian democrat. He's a total tyrant, and I think it's a product of his upbringing. Dad knows best. Folks want a benevolent tyrant for some reason.

I think the essential problem with masculinity in our culture is that it's too often associated with tyranny. Femininity, by contrast, is popularly associated with... democracy. It's the difference between being raised by a single dad or a single mom. Somehow, democracy is perceived as being weaker.
