Too often I have in person seen people from the UK side lecture EU counterparts about all the cards the UK has in ways that are downright embarrassing and counterproductive to UK interests. If something doesn't change here the UK will keep getting blindsided by predictable stuff thar was predicted
Being alumni from UK universities and wanting their kids and kids from their wider milieu to be able to study in the UK is the one area where quite a few EU policymakers have a truly personal stake in post-Brexit arrangements.
That Whitehall and Universities UK were blind to this is telling.
It's "funny" that this issue is presented as "politically difficult for UK to accept" as if there is no political and financial cost for EU gvmts to swallow when it comes to bringing UK back to the EU, in any shape or form. UK pretending that other countries don't have politics. Again.
