And McDowell, Veale, Pepitone, Radatz. 62 Parade is like a cult heroes all-star team.

Bill Mazeroski and Roberto Clemente were teammates for 17 years—Clemente debuted 1 year earlier, and their final games were 1 day apart (Games 4-5 of 1972 NLCS).

Maz retired when he was no longer an effective player, Clemente’s career ended tragically. Mazeroski outlived his friend by 53 years.

In 1967, 6-year-old Mark
believed that George Smith’s nickname was Reggie. I had George’s card, and there was only one Smith in the Red Sox box scores. I had a similar problem with Oriole infielders Bob Johnson and Dave Johnson.

Used to be multiple fights in the crowd every game at Fenway in the 1980s. Now it’s like Disneyland. (This comment could also refer to transition from filthy to clean.) It is no longer an affordable place to go just to get hammered and pass out in the 6th inning.

One of the problems with QT’s long delays between films is all the time he has to express himself.

Should mention that the T207 Lefty Leifeld was a very generous gift from @spoart.bsky.social . Thankfully it came prior to my completion—a 21st card would lead to a crisis.

Last summer I decided that I would try to complete one (and only one) page of tobacco baseball cards (circa 1909-1912). I got card #20 today, and I’m very content.

Satchel’s Wild Ride: How Satchel Paige Finally Made the Hall of Fame – Society for American Baseball Research

55 years ago today, Satchel Paige was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. A few years ago I wrote about the path he took — we all took, honestly — to this glorious day.

Never worked with anyone hired who didn’t deserve the job.

Frank Robinson is the only player in history to win Rookie of the Year, league MVP, All-Star game MVP, and World Series MVP. As a lagniappe, he added an extra MVP (giving him one in each league) and Manager of the Year.

When I have hired, I consider that diversity creates a healthier, more productive work environment and a better end product, and also consider that some applicants have disadvantages in the process that would not effect their performance. Most hires were still white men, but everyone was qualified.

This is less beautiful, but a fun reminder of his brief time with the Carmine Hose.

There is really no difference between mocking DEI programs, or complaining about losing Aunt Jemima’s Syrup, and posting a video of the Obamas as apes. Donald Trump has done all of those things but it’s all just racist bullshit dressed in different clothing. Just own it.

It does help! I actually use them too, often because I want to learn more for my own story.

I have written many thousands of footnotes and I often wonder whether literally any of them have been followed up on.

This is where I am. It is nearly impossible to create that much wealth without being willing to destroy other people and circumvent societal laws or conventions. Good people (which is most of us) are unwilling to do the necessary harm it takes to be insanely wealthy.

The Unexpected Hero (1968 World Series) Has there ever been a World Series in which the two biggest stars in the game were the starting pitchers in Game 1 (and potentially Games 4 and 7)? I maintain that it happened just once – appropria…

RIP Mickey Lolich. He was the star of the first World Series I remember watching, and as such a reminder of my long ago, innocent, worry-free youth.

I wrote this a decade ago. (Its says 2018, but it had been published earlier).

Earlier today I watched The Third Man, for at least the fourth time. Not exactly breaking news, but it is a masterpiece, one of the greatest film experiences I can ever hope to have.

First guy I thought of: Stan Musial resigned December 5, 1967 — he won a championship in his only year as GM. So, not this late.
