Tenna dreams of Cyber City now. Sterile mist masks him and Spamton from the milling crowds. All he can see is the gleam of a scythe-like smile and a rich red suit piped with catgut. When they turn a corner to the main boulevard, key lime streetlights give his addison’s sallow skin a touch more complexion, deceptively human-like if not for the nose. The pair of them hotfoot it over to Queen’s Mansion without a shared word. Tenna feels the unsigned contract burning a hole in his breast pocket. Anticipation sizzles between them, or maybe just the cloudy aftermath of overpriced aged battery acid. When they reach Spamton’s apartment at the end of a carpeted hall, Tenna hits a snag. He’s too tall to fit through the door.

Spamton clicks his tongue. “C’mon, cathode.” He’s already swiped his card key and stepped over the threshold. “Make like an ant.” Tenna is way too drunk to shrink on command, especially when he’s this giddy. Business or no, being invited to his partner’s apartment for the first time is a monumental step. He can’t remember the last time he’s felt this right, like everything is as it should be. “It’s tough,” he mumbles. He has to squat down to be able to see through to the entryway. The place has a faint sulfurous reek to it, but that’s hardly a mood killer. Heck, he knows how bad his face must look right now, all periwinkle flushed and shiny with condensation. “Looks real nice in there, though”
