In Rhode Island, the top 25 employers combined employ more than 100,000 people. If even a fraction of those employees opted to switch to transit, it would have a measurable impact on ridership, not to mention reductions in congestion and emissions taking cars off of the road.

This saves employees, on average, 30% on their commute, increasing their net disposable income and aiding recruitment and retention. Employers ALSO save by reducing FICA and payroll taxes by at least 7.65% of the commute value (Source: ACT). This is a win-win scenario that requires no state funding.

This bill is a common sense measure that would require Rhode Island’s largest employers (500+ employees) to provide bus passes as a pre-tax fringe benefit, at no cost to the state.

The bill leverages the federal tax code, allowing employees to use pre-tax dollars for transit and parking.

Thank You @samzurier.bsky.social & @jenstewart4ri.bsky.social for introducing this important legislation! After repeated scrutiny of RIPTA’s efficiency (an agency a fraction the size of RIDOT) in many previous sessions, this examination of our transportation spending is long overdue!

It’s never been more important to support the new legislation from @mackdistrict6.bsky.social and Rep. Teresa Tanzi that would reverse the 2023 law making the Director of RIDOT the Board Chair of RIPTA, and updates, clarifies, and strengthens other Board appointment guidelines.

More to come…

We were recently hit by a record-breaking blizzard (over 30 inches of snow) and noticed that the bike path at Henderson Bridge has already been cleared by RIDOT.

This is how it should be done β€” bike paths being treated as essential transportation infrastructure.

Due to Post-Blizzard Conditions, RIPTA to Resume Limited Service, including Ride Paratransit, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026
Passengers Should Expect Delays and Detours as Service
Gradually Returns
RIPTA will resume service on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, following the Governor's decision to lift the statewide travel ban. As the state's public transportation provider, RIPTA plays an essential role in supporting the safe reopening of the state's economy. While the most severe impacts of Winter Storm Hernando have passed, safety remains RIPTA's top priority as the state begins reopening and recovery efforts continue.
Although travel restrictions have been lifted, municipalities across Rhode Island continue working to clear roadways and require additional time and resources to complete snow removal operations.
RIPTA officials will continue coordinating closely with state and local partners to monitor roadway conditions and ensure streets are safe and accessible for buses and paratransit vehicles.
As service resumes, passengers should expect delays, detours, and possible route modifications due to narrowed streets and ongoing cleanup efforts. RIPTA expects it may take several days for service to return to normal levels.
Passengers are strongly encouraged to pay close attention to service alerts for the latest updates on route resumptions and detours by visiting RIPTA.com/alerts or signing up for email alerts.

In addition, RIPTA crews are preparing to begin snow removal at bus shelters. This work is contingent upon roads being sufficiently cleared to allow safe access for crews and equipment. RIPTA is responsible for snow removal at nearly 400 bus shelters around the state, as well as major transit hubs such as Kennedy Plaza. Snow removal at approximately 3,600 bus stops located on local sidewalks is the responsibility of municipal governments, businesses and property owners per their local ordinances. These requirements help support pedestrian safety by ensuring that sidewalks and bus stops remain clear and accessible.
The safety of RIPTA passengers and employees remains the Authority's highest priority as service is restored in a safe and responsible manner.
All RIPTA offices, including the Ticket Sales Office in Kennedy Plaza and the Pawtucket-Central Falls Transit Center, will reopen on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

The statute, which we will continue to work to undo, makes the RIDOT Director (or their designee), whoever that person is, the chair at RIPTA.

There will always be a conflict of interest, as DOT and RIPTA fight for the same dollars.

PROVIDENCE STREETS COALITION & SAVE RIPTA
STATEMENT ON THE RESIGNATION OF RIDOT DIRECTOR
PETER ALVITI, JR.
FEB. 4, 2026
For over a decade, Rhode Island taxpayers have forked over billions of dollars to an unaccountable DOT that has not produced adequate results for drivers, failed to meet our emissions reductions goals, and consistently rejected dignity, safety, and convenience for people who cannot or do not drive. On far too many occasions, Director Alviti refused to prioritize the interests of public transit users and people walking and biking in Rhode Island. The Providence Streets Coalition and Save RIPTA welcome new leadership at RIDOT that will have a multimodal, 21st century approach to transportation, respect and communicate with all residents, and center safety and transparency. This will require not only change at the very top, but throughout the Department.
Today's announcement comes on Rosa Parks' birthday β€” known now nationally as Transit Equity Day β€” a reminder that the deep disparities in transportation are not the responsibility of a single person, but have been baked into the system for generations. We will continue to work with our coalition partners and passionate supporters to advocate for a brighter future and look forward to leadership at RIDOT who can be a true partner in that fight. It should be easy, safe, affordable, and enjoyable to get around Rhode Island.
