Statement begins:
The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayerβ€”equivalent to a single cup of coffeeβ€”and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

EncyclopΓ¦dia Britannica will continue to use β€˜Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons:

-We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S.

-The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous.

Dry season in Ivory Coast triggers cocoa shortage fears, farmers say A lack of rain in most of Ivory Coast's cocoa-growing regions could delay the start of the April-to-September mid-crop, potentially leading to a shortage of beans, the main ingredient in chocolate, farmers said on Monday.

Major caveat: this imagery is tentative and informal; not all structures within the fire footprints have burned. But this imagery suggests that there are 10,000+ potentially affected structures within *each* fire footprint (which have expanded since yesterday). #LAfires #CAfire

What Is Causing The Pacific Palisades And Southern California Wildfires? β€” Konsyse A wildfire spread and engulfed a huge portion of the LA neighborhood. Other wildfires have also been reported across South California.

The U.S. Drought Monitor, in its January 1st visual map, placed Southern California under "moderate" to "excessive" drought. AccuWeather meteorologists, in their January 6th report, warned of fast-spreading wildfires due to strong Santa Ana winds. /@konsyse.com

It's always fascinating to see how sparse our historical records of Major #Hurricane US landfalls are !

This is why we need stochastic event sets to fill these gaps, and get a better picture of the risk ( #NaturalDisaster #climaterisk ).

It’s almost winter, but much of the U.S. is still unusually dry Moderate drought covers parts of all but one state. That’s odd, given how late in the year it is.

Yesterday in DC, less than a mile from my house, there was a brush fire in Rock Creek Park. In December. Not normal.

Twitter is extremely creepy these days because 90% of the responses are bots and it’s not exactly clear why. Usually it’s not even political, it’s not selling anything, it’s just bots pretending to be people. The vibe is like boarding a city bus and realizing none of the passengers have faces
