Did H. P. Lovecraft write fantasy horror? Or did he write horrific SCIENCE FICTION?

In the new Bayt al Azif issue 6, astrophysicist Dr. Erik Rosolowsky looks at the hard astronomical science of the 1920s and 30s that fascinated and inspired Lovecraft, and how that has changed in the century since.

Cover of Jim Butcher's PEACE TALKS, a novel of the Dresden Files.

It bugs me that in PEACE TALKS, Jim Butcher implies that H.P. Lovecraft created the Hounds of Tindalos, which were actually created by Frank Belknap Long.

I do like the name "cornerhounds," though.

Is that something Butcher created? It's my first time encountering it.

You can do an entire book just on market leaders who screwed the distribution system and killed the market for everyone.

Couple years after Marvel did it to comic book stores, Wizards of the Coast did it to local game stores with Magic shenanigans.

Significant overlap in these markets didn't help.

IT IS TIME

The man looked up from his beach chair.

"Really?" He said. "I've only just retired."

Death held up a timer. A single grain was about to fall. And then... It didn't.

CURIOUS

Vetinari shrugged.

"I've only just discovered drinks with little umbrellas. I'll let it fall in a bit" 1/17

The Anakin-Padme romance was approximately as beautiful as Chancellor Palpatine's reign was a utopia.

The name on the stationary and website is also PetSmart.

But the motion line on that ball is 100% an apostrophe emphasizing the dual nature of the name.

Which is to say, I’m unbelievably thrilled to say this morning I’ve signed a contract with @mitpress.bsky.social for the trade publication of my next book, an exploration of the first two decades of TTRPG Actual Play.

Having never done that, I'm curious: Why would I want to do that?

I guess if nobody in the house liked boiled eggs, it would be a way to avoid food wastage? (Assuming you're immediately using the blown innards for something.)

I don't know anyone who went to therapy because they saw a gay character in a movie.

I know A LOT of people in therapy because they were falsely told being LGBT was wrong/sinful/something to be ashamed of.

Docter's statement that Pixar/Disney are led by bigots is, sadly, not surprising.

The only positive thing about what Lucas did to his films is that they're an astoundingly good demonstration of how important editing is in determining the final quality of a film.

If someone's under 30, they have likely never seen the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy.

And it has a huge impact on the legacy of these films.

This comic is short (>100 pgs) so the paperback only costs $12!!

The good news is that’s a STEAL for an OGN!!

The downside is that it’ll take more backers for every creator involved in this project to be paid what they’re worth 🙏

If you haven’t already, please consider supporting this project!

Art of Rulings 15 – Making Plans Go to Part 1Consider two scenarios. In the first:Player: I want to hack the Lytekkas mainframe.GM: Make a DC 20 Hacking check. And in the second:Player: Okay, I’ve seduced the secretary

Do your players refuse to make plans and instead default to the most boring options?

It might be your fault.

Quietly, calmly and forensically, BBC just dismantled the Trump communications shitshow on Iran.

No hyperbole, just laying out an unprecedented military, diplomatic and reputational shambles.

Worth a watch.

The cover of a new DORK TOWER collection - The Dork Web. Matt, Kern and Carson are staring aghast at whatever Igor if looking at on his "bubble" 2001 iMac...

Just posting this here for accountability:

I am giving myself a March 31 deadline to finish compiling this first-ever collection of the web strips.

The series will contain 400 comics in each volume. There are currently close to 2,500 strips in the archives - plus assorted comics for GameSpy, etc.

On second thought, not going to get into an argument with someone who thinks 1975 CE happened before 1970 CE.

Maybe they're Merlin.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that sort of high-brow stuff is what the audience is looking for right now.
