So hey, if you aren't a fan of cancer, you know one thing you can do that will make a tangible difference?

Get vaccinated against COVID & mask up (especially in healthcare facilities, pharmacies, on transit).

(COVID is very dangerous for folks with cancer & also increases cancer risk.)

A borderless 4-panel informative comic on drawing fat people.
Fat can be distributed in a lot of different ways! Play in the space! (7 small drawings of fat people with different shapes, sizes, and silhouettes)
While this may exist IRL... (a depiction of a conventionally attractive person with an exaggerated hourglass figure) ... This is more common! (a depiction of a fat person with a more barrel- or pear-shaped body) Tummy fat is the easiest to gain, the hardest to lose, and the one people draw the least!
Common areas of fat distribution: Upper arms, chin, breasts, tummy!!, butt, thighs (drawing of a person with a fat belly t-posing for body part labeling) This is fat (profile view of a torso with a fat belly, an arrow pointing down marked "sag") This is bloating/pregnancy (same silhouette but with a protruding smooth and round abdominal area).
Also: TALL FAT PEOPLE EXIST!! (three drawings of people: a short fat person, a tall thin person, and a taller fat person)

Grieving bingus report. Francie is doing okay but she definitely misses Fergus. He was like her kind, gentle dad. She’s keeps looking for him and has been extra clingy with me. πŸ’”

Australian bird of the year 2025: nominate your favourite now We want to hear which Australian birds you think should be shortlisted for the Guardian/Birdlife Australia bird of the year poll next month Which of the 830 bird species that call Australia home (or at least one of their homes) should make it into the 2025 Australian bird of the year poll? Australia has the greatest diversity of avian life in the world, home to nearly one in 10 of the world’s 10,000 living bird species. And we love to celebrate it. Australians are renowned for admiring our beautiful, bountiful and boisterous birds. And nothing highlights that more than the Guardian/Birdlife Australia bird of the year poll, held every two years, when birdlovers around the country battle it out to see their favourite feathered friend take the crown as best bird. A medium sized brown mottled bird with a solar powered GPS device on its back.

Our April cohort of birds have officially graduated the close monitoring phase!

Having completed 6-months of living their best wild lives means that I’ll now be mostly hands off (except for following their movements via their GPS backpacks like the creep that I am)

Thrive, birdies, thrive!

I use these when I have to go for an mri or as a modified nose mask for dentist appointments. When I wear them for MRI’s it’s the most secure I’ve felt in a mask. You can *feel* the seal.

Small, gem-like wetland kingfisher. Shows geographical variation, with most birds having orange underparts, but birds in some parts of the range have a white belly. Found in almost all habitats with water, including streams, rivers, lakes, rice paddies, and lagoons. Sits motionless for long periods before plunging to the water to snatch prey.

even the smartest folks whose takes i otherwise appreciate, who otherwise want to resist fascism themselves & encourage others to, find wearing a mask in, at least, public indoor spacesβ€”to prevent the harms of this administration from impacting othersβ€”to be a bridge too far; it’s shameful, frankly.

I really can't recommend familiarizing yourself with the things that live and grow around you enough. It's immediately grounding to be able to recognize individual plants/bugs/animals and have some understanding of their relationship to each other and to you. It makes day-to-day life feel richer

If I’m being truly honest,
then yes, I am tired
of wearing a mask
of taking precautions
of reading health studies
yes, I am tired,
but what exhausts me
what truly exhausts me
is being asked
if I’m tired of those things
by people who wonder
why they keep getting sick.

When they respond
(and they will respond)
to the precautions you take
by telling you
that the virus
is here to stay,
calmly and politely reply
that you know
that the virus
is here to stay
which is why you’re doing
what you can
to ensure
that your stay here
doesn’t get cut short.

When you wear a mask, you’re practicing radical self care and community care.

You’re protecting yourself from COVID and other airborne diseases, while also committing to breaking chains of transmission.

You’re ensuring you don’t get anyone else sick.

Masking is an act of resistance.

All this fascism has been making me think about Shirley Jackson’s β€˜The Lottery’ and how survival under fascism is merely a matter of not being picked, and contrary to what many believe, there is no way to game your life so that you are not in the running, and how prescient she was, and insightful.
