More than 660,000 Fraser sockeye are now on the move! Among them, the endangered early Stuart sockeye are returning in unusually large numbers, racing 1,200 km upriver to spawn near Fort St. James.

This project is funded by the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF) through the Government of Canada and Province of BC.

By tracking where groundwater pools up, their team can identify sites salmon already use, expand or restore other refuges, and support long-term watershed management.

With support from PSF, Scw’exmx First Nation Fisheries are now using drones to map cold-water refuges: hidden pockets of cool water where salmon take shelter from the summer heat.

In the Nicola Valley, years of drought and a devastating 2021 flood have displaced streams from their natural paths and left the Coldwater River — which flows through Merritt and continues south — running dry.
