Living here on this absolute jewel of a planet. Thank you First Nations. PhD in sustainability, equity & health. Former policy adviser ALP & Greens. Banned from Greens 20 yrs ago by silly rule theyโ€™ve now gotten rid of, but still waiting for apology! โ€ฆ๐Ÿ™„

This is a really important point. Our state government in Victoria (Australia) is proposing high to medium density areas near where I live & many of us are concerned about loss of green space, heat island effects & flooding w all the hard surfaces. Limiting cars could help a lot

Ah right, Iโ€™ll have to look in the library. I havenโ€™t subscribed in recent years although they do have some good stuff. Thank you

I worked in public health policy, planning and research for almost 40 years and guess what - I donโ€™t have PHI. As far as โ€˜protectingโ€™ the public system by reducing demand, if you paid that money in taxation it would be more efficiently used to provide public health services

Can you provide more info on that? V interesting, I didnโ€™t know

Wonโ€™t stop canโ€™t stop being annoyed by #BoM new website - itโ€™s not just that itโ€˜s been dumbed down but even minor details like the pretentious name โ€˜The Bureauโ€™ - what are they, the CIA or something

This is so true - when Brexit was being debated, so many โ€™seriousโ€™ commentators treated it as primarily economic, forgetting - or in some cases deliberately denying - the peace project. Yet thatโ€™s the most important part

Australian radio host says female leaders are 'destroying the joint' Comments by Australia's best-known radio DJ, Alan Jones, spark outrage and re-ignite debate on sexism in nation's politics

In Australia we were accused some time ago of โ€˜destroying the jointโ€™ which pretty much means ruining everything - so yeah, did a pretty thorough job www.theguardian.com/world/2012/s...

Yes itโ€™s often finding your way into getting a proper conversation started - thatโ€™s what some people donโ€™t realise, while youโ€™re chatting about mundane things, youโ€™re getting clues about who this person is, what they care about, whatโ€™s really interesting to and about them.

I strongly agree - as a gardener, conservationist and climate change educator, there was a lot of temperature and rainfall information readily available on the old site that was both useful and informative to me - now itโ€™s complicated and hard to find. Why do that in a time of climate change?

Thank you - I should look back at the scenarios as well as pathways I guess to try to understand the relationship, what was predicted, what has happened, etc. Wd be good if next report had discussion of that (deeper than just that countries โ€˜didnโ€™t meet their targetsโ€˜) is that likely?

I get the point - they think itโ€™s too dangerous - but the reason itโ€™s too dangerous is that there are too many cars on the road. like a vicious cycle but itโ€™s actually vicious cars

The weird thing about car culture in Naarm/Melbourne is that I live without a car here, and people who know me, who know how I live, tell me that it canโ€™t be done
(I think they mean it can only be done by people like you who are foolhardy - normal people wonโ€™t do it.)

quick search - report definitely used the term โ€œno or limited overshootโ€ which suggests there were some modelled scenarios with no overshoot doesnโ€™t it?

I understand that itโ€™s too late now but do believe it could have been done if we werenโ€™t all politically controlled by mainstream economics (which is also a cover for not confronting power)

04.11.2025 09:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There was at least one in the 6th report though that met it without overshoot surely? Sorry havenโ€™t checked but am pretty sure thatโ€™s right. And later someone from degrowth movt published analysis how it cd be done with demand management, I think. Can search if needed

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Read that back.

When 400 people control more wealth than half a countryโ€™s population, we have a very serious problem.

04.11.2025 07:45 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Just out of curiosity, do you mean the northern hemisphere (not the western hemisphere as you said)? The part of the earth thatโ€™s moving into winter while the other part (southern hemisphere, where I live) moves into summer? Or is there some significance to โ€˜western hemisphereโ€™ that I havenโ€™t got?

02.11.2025 21:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I hate it because itโ€™s a colonial northern hemisphere thing about autumn and the coming of winter, when itโ€™s actually spring/poorneet season here. The British came here and put all their festivals over the top of the actual seasons of this country and people here just keep doing it

31.10.2025 13:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I really donโ€™t like the way these colonial northern hemisphere traditions have been imposed on our seasons

31.10.2025 13:35 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

some people may object to it as American but the more important thing is itโ€™s a colonial northern hemisphere import - it celebrates the autumn harvest (eg pumpkins) and tells spooky stories about the coming of winter. But here it is spring or Poorneet (tadpole) season in Wurundjeri country

Net present value of climate benefits (market and nonmarket), air-quality cobenefits, and abatement costs under five methane abatement cost scenarios. Horizontal black lines show net benefits. The dashed line indicates the switching value threshold and available cost headroom before net present value is reduced to zero. The discount rate is 2.5%.

The economic case for methane action is clear.

- Global methane abatement yields large net global economic benefits.
- The benefit-cost ratio of methane action is at least 3โ€”rising to more than 6 when health cobenefits are included.

Slipping quickly over the places where people wonโ€™t live and thrive, like the islands that will be beneath the ocean or the millions of people, even in my own wealthy country, who will be at risk from rising seas.

Australiaโ€™s first formal treaty with Indigenous traditional owners passed in Victoria Step towards reconciliation hailed as โ€˜a historic momentโ€™ with premier Jacinta Allan saying it gives Aboriginal Australians the power to shape policies that affect their lives

An incredible moment for Australia. Congratulations to all the First Nations leaders who worked so tirelessly to make this happen, and to the Victorian Government and Parliament for embracing the opportunity to show genuine national leadership. #Treaty #auspol

I am moved to be in Victoria where this has happened. It is only a start but at least it is a start. Victoria has a bloody and brutal history towards First Peoples. We can acknowledge that and learn how to go forward

I think itโ€™s worth us (as climate scientists and advocates) looking at what he is saying, to try to understand it. My thoughts (which Iโ€™ve already posted) are that he lacks any feeling for the natural world. Men like him and Musk et al gain power because they see the world as something to be

He canโ€™t say it because it would threaten his status as a wealthy white man who flies around the world telling people what to and (so the internet tells me) likes eating cheeseburgers
