This is a snowman I made on my friend’s terrace on the Upper West Side in 2014.
Happy Jeff Wells Punches His Refrigerator Night to film lovers everywhere. Every time Sinners wins something, that fridge will take a few dents; if it goes all the way he’s throwing it out the window.
I like David Dayen but his naivete is really something.
Shocking that so many antitrust people believed that Trump would actually be good on this issue.
In honor of the anniversary of my semester abroad at Russia's Moscow Art Theater, I'll be posting essays about my experience there. For my first essay, I recount the two worst shows I ever worked on - and how I got made the fall guy for them.

I would love for Andrew Scott to have been nominated too—I thought his Dick Rodgers radiated vibes of what it must be like to run into your ex at your own wedding. (But could they have found a Hammerstein who looked *anything* like the real guy? Was Noah Emmerich not available?)
Thank you for stating this in such bold and clear terms. I think people like that get a perverse pleasure out of being called racist, sexist, etc. because then it gives them the right to play victim and center their own hurt feelings rather than those harmed by their phobias.
Of the ones I’ve heard of, Josephine Riesman is the only one I trust to ask the hard questions necessary. Emily Matlis, who did the famous interview with Prince Andrew (and an equally hard-hitting one with Kari Lake) would be my choice.
What interviewer do you think could do the hard-hitting Platner one-on-one that the others haven't done yet?
Chotiner would probably just pitch him softballs the whole interview.
Daniella Mazzio's phenomenal essay on The Secret Agent makes me want to watch the film again right now.

The Birdcage opened thirty years ago today, so in its honor, I want to share one of my favorite stories about Mike Nichols that didn't make it into my biography. This is from an interview I did with Nathan Lane.
Also I don't know if Matt meant it this way, but I love that this post opens with a reference to my favorite line in Moonstruck. (Tied with about 100 other favorite lines in Moonstruck.)

Matt Zoller Seitz was the first person ever to take a chance on me in journalism. Since then he's been a mentor, a co-author, and a friend. I'm so angry that NY Mag laid him off and hope you all buy something from @mzspress.bsky.social today - like our book together, The Deadwood Bible!
I'd been meaning to write this essay - reposted with a better thumbnail and link - for a long time. I'm trying to post on Substack more now, so please like and subscribe.

What infuriates me is that his defenders (I'm looking at you, Pod Save America) have doubled down on him. There's no shame in taking the L, but they simply refuse to let him go.
For all my frustration with it, I do think the acting is good given what everyone has to work with. But Do the Right Thing changed me in such a huge way when I first saw it a few years later that it made me go back to Crash and think “wait a minute…”
20 years ago today, Crash beat Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture, and the way my classmates and I discussed both films was a wakeup call that prejudice isn't limited to one side. Been meaning to write this one for a while:

Phenomenal breakdown from Eliza Orlins about how Texas disenfranchised Black voters last night.
I'm fine with James Talarico winning the nomination in Texas. What I'm not fine with is the racism his supporters had towards Jasmine Crockett and her fans over the past few months. He's going to have to really put in the work to get the Black support he needs to be competitive after this.
I still have Ethan Hawke as the dark horse to win. He's been campaigning like crazy.
So is the Far Left ever going to disavow Graham Platner, or are they in so deep at this point that they can't admit failure?

Agreed here. Would love to know what it would have looked like with more promotion, too.
Whenever a person says "but Democrats had a trifecta!" I know they didn't watch Schoolhouse Rock - particularly "Three-Ring Government" - as a kid, because having two branches of government does not mean "trifecta." (Also, Lynn Ahrens wrote the lyrics for Ragtime!)
The “no new wars” crowd seem to be even more silent with every new war started. Hope you’re enjoying your choice.

I was offline the whole time this was occurring and I see everyone arguing over someone whose posts I can’t see—and from what it sounds like, I wouldn’t want to!
The base of the Democratic Party are Black women. That base loves both Kamala Harris and Jasmine Crockett. Every time someone complains about this, ask them who they think the base is.
As it turns out, killing Vic Morrow is only the second-worst thing John Landis ever did.
