The more I look at it the more I realize this would make a lovely static wide shot, with actors moving right to left.

Yeah, if there were some wildlife or people on the bridge it would be solid, I think, but as is the colors bring all the detail and contrast out. Works better as a 80's-90's kind of shot rather than a 30's-40's

defined while not losing the luminosity under and through the trees is tricky. Not sure I made it any better, but this is my quick subjective feel on it. (Original first, my half-assed effort second)

For this particular shot, I like the color better, but I tried to mess with the black and white a bit. I feel like less contrast (I toned down the upper end of the curve a little, and a touch of sharpening (less than 20%) to give it a Kurosawa film vibe feels right, but keeping the bridge
