A very spiky caterpillar, mostly black. It has three bands of yellow studded with orange dots, one near the tail, one in the middle, one near the head. It has smaller yellow markings along the body and lines of very small blue dots. Its head is very shiny black with a yellow dot on the forehead. It is about 2.5cm long.
I donβt have a cat so I post caterpillars on #caturday and this one is stunning. Look at the tiny blue dots, yβall! π±πΏ

This is the Peanut Beetle (Ulomoides dermestoides) that is a cosmopolitan stored product pest. It isn't reported as established in the US, but you can buy colonies as pet food from multiple places online. These things reproduce like crazy in a neglected mason jar with some peanuts!

An orange beetle, pretty flat and oval-shaped. The wing covers are covered in a texture that looks almost like graph paper, little raised lines and darker colored square pots. The legs are black, and so are the antennae. The antennae are comb-like, very spiky.
One of the coolest aspects of insect photography is the realization that colors and textures are CRAZY up close. What may seem like a solid color or a plain matte surface becomes something astounding up close. This net-winged beetle in the family Lycidae is one of my favorite pix of 2024 #bugsky πΏ

If you let a zoonotic virus outbreak unfold unchecked for months in livestock, with sporadic human cases, you basically give the virus an elite training course to win gold in the epidemic/pandemic Olympics.
This is not a good trend.
