DOD political purges and newfound disdain for education.
For those who don’t know, Schake’s writing has a deservedly good reputation on the merits, she works with AEI and DPBAC, and was a McCain 2008 foreign policy advisor.
If they’re disinviting her, they oppose anyone who isn’t a MAGA sycophant.
The moral position would be to not hold the World Cup in the U.S. at this point. But the moral position would also have been to not have Russia or Qatar host. FIFA doesn’t care and has never really cared.
But I do think we should be ready for things to go sideways this summer
With us at war with Iran and Trump demanding "unconditional surrender" from the Iran's Gov't, I am still surprised that people have memory-holed this great piece unearthing his business deal apparently money laundering for Iran's Revolutionary Guard. @adamdavidson.com @newyorker.com
Is anyone keen to open a convo about the impact of the war on Iran on the Gulf states' strategy in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, Libya, and beyond on the continent? (been scratching my head a lot on this lately)
This update is going to make the ~trade v. racist point scoring~ balance a whole lot more interesting:

Too many people, including some news media, let the truth be trampled upon without thought for what is happening to us and our nation.
Yeah. You can’t TACO this. You can only pretend to TACO. And at this point the Iranian regime has no reason to dial back immediately if he does.
Enrique Tarrio and other Proud Boys were convicted of seditious conspiracy. Trump pardoned them.
Tarrio and his men planned the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Tarrio even claimed credit for it, messaging others: “Make no mistake…We did this…”
Now he’s meeting with Sec. Rubio.
Just a reminder it’s been two days since reports came out, later acknowledged by Trump and his Administration, that Russia has been helping Iran to try and kill US military personnel.
And the Trump response so far has been...drum roll please...to reduce sanctions on Russia!
Amazing how quickly "We're fighting this war for freedom of the Iranian people" becomes "The Iranian people are at fault for not rising up."
Also, moving an official to a meaningless job that you're inventing just for them is a classic African dictator move to get someone out of office without admitting faulty judgment in giving them power in the first place.
I feel like I probably should have known this, but the majority of US diplomatic missions have no confirmed ambassador.
Of the 190 permanent missions we have, 78 have confirmed ambassadors. 112 do not.
We have no ambassador in 58.9% of our embassies around the world.
I know at least three people who are stuck somewhere because they had flights going through Dubai or Doha and now they can’t get home. The vast majority of people connecting between the US, Africa and South Asia go through the Gulf. I wish there was more coverage of that human impact.
China-led security platforms carry major implications for African domestic security norms, governance, and strategic autonomy. African countries risk deeper entanglement in China’s aims without clear external engagement strategies that define long-term national interests.
Ahem.

1) Are there any extensive overhaul programs of the type “polled” here on offer? 2) Is there any suggestion that abolition is in contemplation of a majority of the current Congress or is this just a abstract hypothetical? 3) They category to the right of “conservative” is obscured in the image.
1) He’s right; 2) But he supported Trump and can’t claim to be surprised; 3) Would he speak up for “American interests” if the Emirates weren’t get hit?
In his last days Muammar Ghadaffi was incredibly unpopular within Libya. The thing that was shoring him up was his relationships with European politicians like Sarkozy and Berlusconi (and Blair) as well as other African leaders. When they assassinated him it radicalised his defenders.
THIS.
Since the CIA’s Watergate-era spying on civil rights and anti-war activists inside the United States, intelligence agencies have, with some exceptions, been prohibited from gathering information on the domestic activities of U.S. citizens.

One of the many lessons I hope people take from this entire thing is that being a billionaire is not a moral achievement or a sign of intelligence. Stop letting people pronounce on random things because they are rich.
Trump, July 19: "All three nuclear sites in Iran were completely destroyed and/or OBLITERATED. It would take years to bring them back into service."
Witkoff, Sunday: "They're probably a week away from having industrial-grade bomb-making material."
