An illustration for the cover of The Dragon Wakes with Thunder, written by K. X. Song. A dragon circles the borders of the image, blue-green waves, crashing in the foreground as a figure stands centered, pointing a blade up towards the dragon. An illustration of some mouse and friends, hiding in a the base of a tree. The mouse in the foreground puts on its boots, as it looks behind it to see its other mouse friends running towards the opening of the tree. A little wolf chases a butterfly, behind it is an array of landscapes that it's travelled (ex. dense forests and fields.) An illustration of a Wallaby family, sitting comfortably beneath some foliage.

One of those mornings where you spend two hours painting and repainting the same section of a piece and you're still not sure if it's better than when you started.

A peaceful scene of a swamp, with greens, blues and purples, a tree in the foreground and the head of a huge dragon visible resting in the water. A white heron takes off next to the dragon and it's eye is open. a blue dragon prepares to land at its nest of two dragonlings atop a huge mountain. Pale pink mountains with mists are in the background watercolour. A blue and pink scene of a lagoon with a mermaid sitting on a rock in the middle of the water with her pink tail and fins breaking from the surface. half human/half tentacles. The being stares at the viewer while relaxing in a cave pool with its tentacles coming out of the water, its upper body looks humanoid with long black hair and white glowing eyes.

It's #Portfolioday apparently! So why not join in.
I'm a watercolourist based in the UK. My favourite genre is fantasy and folklore with a heavy leaning on creatures, but I have dabbled in other areas!

Cover for Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao, a golden dragon coils around a man and a woman wearing elaborate tiled armour and headdresses, their wrists tied together with a golden thread A luminous golden bird hovers in the air, rippling images of other kinds of wings radiate out from it in a space of quantum possibility A vampire in a high collared coat stands in the circle of gnarled, grasping hands, haloed by red diamonds Cover for Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher, a small toad watches a young girl rest in a pool of water, her long hair entangled with thorny brambles and lilypads

Photo of a painting of a couch, held up in front of the couch Painting of a white couch with blue shadows

Day three. The light changes so damn fast when you're trying to paint shadows.

Your easel/board thing is so good! I have been precariously balancing paints on my knees and it is very silly.

A photograph of a gouache painting with an orange roof and blue sky in the background A photograph of a gouache painting of green trees,a power pole and the corner of a roof

#pleinairpril Let's go! Day 1!

I forgot how hard painting outdoors is. Especially while fending a puppy off from drinking your paint water.

Not to make us feel old or anything, but when I had a little cubicle at art school a decade ago, I had little prints of your work up on my walls. (And now I'm a cover artist too so that's a nice lil circle)

A painting study of a tree outside a window A painting study of a pink vinyl cutter on a desk A painting study of the corner of a bed and a bookshelf A painting study of a desktop in front of a window with a monitor and plant

I also got covid in the middle of that month and it was the sickest I've ever been, so a lot of these were painted from bed.

A painting study of a couch with a lemon pattern A painting study of a pot plant in front of a curtain A painting study of stacks of music and a music stand in front of a window

A few more pleinairpril studies from 2022! I used the challenge that year as a way to spend quiet time with and connect to the new home I'd moved into. So a little less open air than the usual plein air.

A grid of 30 plein air studies from 2021 A Plein air study of a strawberry plant in a sunny window box

I think I'd like to do plein airpril again this year - I did it a couple of times in 2021 and 2022 and it was a lovely way of connecting to my neighbourhood and home.

It might be a nice way to get into gouache painting practice again.

A photo of the paper stencil over the wood plates, masking out the edges and open areas so that they wouldn't overprint ink. A photo of the cardboard jig holding one of the plates in place.

For these ones I tried engraving around the lines and cutting away the bigger spaces - next time I would cut right to the edge of the plate to avoid having to use a stencil to mask it.
I also used a cardboard jig I cut to exactly position the plates in the right place.
