The opportunity cost of having money tied up in the building never goes away and you need to ensure it isn’t profitable to tear the old building down and build a new one. I’m not sure how big those expenses are relative to operating costs, but I’d guess the later would bind in some cases.

Opinion | The Ambush on the National Guard The alleged shooting by an Afghan ‘partner’ shouldn’t condemn all who assisted the U.S. and now live here.

WSJ:
"Some will say this means U.S. should never admit such refugees, but the alternative is abandoning allies who assist USA in war to retribution of our enemies..How many will assist us if they believe there will be no exit for them if U.S. leaves"

Postdoc at the Minnesota Population Center, @minnpop.bsky.social

Applications open now and being evaluated on a rolling basis. Pass on to demographers you know!

(This one requires folks to relocate to the Twin Cities, because it involves work in the restricted data center)

Attention IO job market candidates:

Sometimes speakers in the CMA's external economics seminar series have to cancel at relatively short notice. We would love for these slots to go to JMCs to present their job market paper.

Drop me a message if you are interested or share with those who might be.

How Has Industry Consolidation Changed the Way Americans Shop? - ProMarket In new research, Dominic Smith and Sergio Ocampo show that retail concentration has increased in most markets across the United States, with the expansion of large retail chains driving the trend toward a more concentrated retail landscape. Their findings are based on new product-level census data for all U.S. retailers. They explain the implications of this increased concentration for the everyday shopping experience of clothing, electronics, groceries, and much more.

Me holding a bike and screaming with strava text showing a completed 124 mile ride for day 2 of my bike ride.

Tomorrow I will be finishing a 321 mile bike ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati to raise money for Gigi's Playhouse Cleveland in memory of my Aunt, Amy Jo Smith.

Amy died in March and Gigi’s Playhouse was her second home since they moved in nearby.

The route of a 19:59 5k. Picture of me in running gear with a 2 year old in a jogging stroller and a 4 year old on a bike.

My attempt to defend the stroller division title for the #econ5k. Pushing 5 more pounds than last year, but she sang to me the entire run. We got some nice company on the cooldown.

We’re trying the 2yo on a trundle that pulls out from the 4yo’s bed. It’s 10 pm and I’m sending this while lying on their floor trying to get them to sleep so maybe not the best idea, but the 2yo has started refusing to sleep alone so we are desperate.

The best idea we have right now is to use the Pierce and Schott HS-NAICS as a backup way of identifying similar products.

Yes, I know this was a bad example because chapter 75 is nickel and articles thereof but it seems like some recent job market paper probably did this.

Has anyone created a similarity index for HS codes? For example nickel wire and nickel scrap are under different HS4s but a similarity score on description would say they are similar. #econsky

Me: What did you learn at school today?
3yo: We learned economics.
Me: What did you learn about economics?
3yo: We learned about capital.
Me: Huh?

3yo: We learned about capital A for Apple.

I guess he does pay attention when we read to him.

Is there any way to know if this could be due to consumers substituting to carry out instead of eat in? It seems like things like Toast have made carry out much less labor intensive since 2020 and maybe carry out accounts for more spending on fits away from home now?

I’d also accept any northeast Ohio content that you want to provide. Rate vendors at the West Side Market, favorite bridges over the Cuyahoga, etc.

I’ve been wondering this as well. I have a collection of data that would be convenient to have in an SQL db, but do I really want to be my own db admin?
