New research shows that even with modest reductions in military funding, the United States would keep a whole lot of carbon out of the atmosphere.

We show that sustained cuts to U.S. military expenditures could result in annual energy savings on par with what the nation of Slovenia or the U.S. state of Delaware consumes annually by 2032.
02.07.2025 19:54 β π 1 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0We also illustrate the potential impacts of different spending decisions on DOD energy consumption and present a forecast from 2023 to 2032 for seven different scenarios.
02.07.2025 19:54 β π 1 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0We find that a decrease in military expenditures has a larger effect on decreasing energy consumption than an increase in expenditures does on increasing consumption. This is largely due to cuts in DOD energy consumption from facilities and vehicles and equipment, and jet fuel in particular.
02.07.2025 19:54 β π 1 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0We conduct a time series analysis of the relationship between U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) direct energy consumption and U.S. military expenditures from 1975 to 2022, and we test for directional asymmetry in the effect of expenditures on energy consumption.

As military action and the threat of war spreads, this new paper by @akjorgenson.bsky.social and colleagues provides detailed analyses of the climate effects of military expansion and war with data from 104 nations.

This is part of a collaborative project that has been going on for over 15 years. But it feels much more urgent now. And a huge kudos to the current editors of Social Problems. They are setting the bar high for how journal editors should do things.

The short-run and long-run effects of the capital-intensiveness and size of militaries on carbon emissions are positive and nontrivial. Further, their estimated effects are consistent across three distinct measures of emissions, statistically symmetrical, and robust to different modeling techniques.
19.06.2025 01:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We argue that the capital-intensiveness and size of militaries shape path dependencies, which structure short-run and long-run effects on national emissions. To test our propositions, we estimate dynamic models of emissions for 104 nations from 1990-2020. Overall, the findings confirm our arguments.
