Pretty much. Using photos can be helpful but realistically if you want something dynamic, you're not going to see a lot of the character. Poses that I generally tend to do would obscure the face which personally I prefer to show the faces of the characters I draw so I "break model" to make it happen

There are a lot of people out there who have a better concept of it than I do but I think it helps too that often "good-looking" perspective work won't be anatomically correct. A lot of the good stuff out there "breaks model" to make poses look dynamic or visually appealing.

Same for me, I work out the general shapes and build off of that. It's honestly how I find perspective and foreshortening to be a concept I can grasp well because I'm simply just layering and rotating these shapes around to be closer or farther away and building my pose off of that.
