Oil pipelines are back in the spotlight.

But with shifting markets, uncertain prices, and Indigenous rights at stake, the decision is complex. In this new paper, economist @aleach.ca examines the risks, benefits, and viability of a new oil pipeline.

How Carney can use policy to unite the country Every policy move should be β€œdual use,” solving a thorny problem while also helping to mend the country’s cleavages. Four areas present opportunities.

β€œDual-use” doesn’t just apply to defence.

jenditchburn.bsky.social & rsamson.bsky.social argue the new minority govt should adopt a dual-use lens for all major policies: supporting national priorities and responding to the needs of rural and Western communities.

It’s time to put Canada’s employment insurance program on solid footing Rather than introducing a flurry of stop-gap measures as it did during COVID, Ottawa should make meaningful, long-lasting changes to the EI system.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Prolonged tariffs could trigger lasting economic shifts. Canada needs a long-term approachβ€”starting with meaningful EI reform. It’s time to act.

The @irpp.org hosted a series of workshops, and published several reports, looking at EI reform between 2021 and 2023.

It isn't easy to increase the number of people that are eligible for EI and the income received on EI, while trying to keep premiums low for workers and businesses.

Employment Insurance reform could help Canadian workers that face job loss if the U.S. imposes tariffs. EI also acts as an economic stabilizer, helping people who are unemployed continue to purchase goods and services from local businesses.
