Marvel Transformers is such lightning in a bottle: Both Budianski and Furman being forced to adapt the whims and narratives of an ongoing toyline while being determined to make it a "real" comic and serious (anti-) war story. We'll never get that dynamic in commercial fiction again.

2005: All you really need to bring back in Jungle Beat is Donkey Kong and The Banana.

2025: All you need to bring back in Bananza is Donkey Kong, Rambi, Cranky Kong, and The Shovel.

I don't think there's a funnier moment of kinetic game design in a commercial release than the Revenant coming up the bridge elevator in the first level of Plutonia. Not actually a difficult encounter, but it's a comically timed kick in the teeth that communicates everything about the game's ethos.
