May Day Play Sometimes our imaginings scream or sing, and sometimes they whisper or hum quite lullabies. In this evening of worlding, we stayed quiet, gave voice instead to the more-than-human world through our…

Catching up on writing (part 1)

A May Day post, a little late for Labor Day.

In a better world though, perhaps every day would be celebrating us workers, and this post would be right on time.

There's a lot of darkness right now, so every glimmer can mean a lot

There could be picnics with snacks and art supplies. Comment boxes on site. Walking discussions and visioning exercises. There could be so many things. But it takes time and energy to try them out.

If we did though, our public spaces could reflect the creativity and diversity of our communities.

What if, instead of *allowing* for comments, our public institutions *facilitated* the public's input? Not through passive letters that are mostly ignored and thrown out, but through active and creative interventions?

What if they tried to make civic engagement fun?

Some people may open the municipality's letter. Of those who do, a handful may already feel strongly enough about the park to take the time and write something in.

But many many more people interact with this park, and, even if only for a few passing moments, have ideas about what it could be.

A wall made of light and dark blue painted bricks, with a circular hole in the center framed by orange painted bricks. Through the hole, trees and a pond can be seen.

In a small park in #Tilburg stands a strange brick structure with a hole right in the center, creating a window onto the park's shallow pond.

The municipality is now collecting comments on renovations for this park. There's a QR code and a survey. But what if they did something more creative?

Situating the Outside My Window project within the concept of "enclosure", @schuylerlaparle.bsky.social reflects on how we can use art to challenge the systems that regulate how our bodies move and interact with the world.

Everyone, everywhere. This is a collection of all window re-imaginings shared with us. To read each artist’s reflection on their process, click on an image and the β“˜ button in the lower corner.

A beautiful thing to wake up to: the first from-a-distance @outsidemywindow.bsky.social project contribution!

I love organizing art parties in my community. But there's a very special joy that comes from a distant person sharing theirs with me.

More please 🌻

Yellow background with black text reading "Jason (Arable Lands). Tilburg, the Netherlands. Usually, when I look out the window and see the barren pavement, the tiny fenced yards enclosing not a single living thing, the space taken up by garages full of SUVs and forgotten consumer goods, I curse Pangloss and think "truly, we live in the worst of possible worlds". This project was a pleasant invitation to instead tend to a hypothetical connective garden."

The First Gathering Under the shifting shadows of a collapsing system, we have to look out our windows and learn to see possibilities, not just the world as it is. We have to envision and enact a world renewed, not in…

"Imagining the end of the world is easier than imagining the end of capitalism" is only true if we forget that we are creative. And capitalism is really good at making us forget.

But all it takes is a few friends and some art supplies to remember.

Outside My Window Reclaiming the commons one window at a time

Very excited to announce that a collaborative art project aimed at "reclaiming the commons" is now open for contributions!

These are not good times, and so I needed an outlet for creating, sharing, and fostering hope. This is my modest attempt at that. You're all invited🌻
