6. Passengers beneath the funnel of ferry. Poor air quality in ports, due to the burning of fossil fuels is linked to health issues such as asthma, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, and premature death. According to @transportandenvironment air on the deck of passenger ships can be as bad as in the most polluted cities on Earth (Dave Walsh 2024)

7. Oil tankers in Gulf of Mexico (Dave Walsh 2010). By weight, 40% of maritime trade consists either of fossil fuels on way to be burned or of chemicals derived directly from fossil fuels.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, I recently co-wrote something on the impact black carbon emissions from ships on the Arctic, and I’ve also made some photos which relate to this work bit.ly/shippingphot...

5. “Green cruising” - ship using liquified natural gas, a fossil fuel – not green. LNG emits 25% less carbon dioxide than conventional marine fuels but it is mostly methane, a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) that traps 86 times more heat than the same amount of CO2 over a 20-yr time period (International Council on Clean Transportation) (Dave Walsh 2024)

4. A cruise carrying 5-6000 passengers docked in the port of Ajaccio. The ship’s visit can increase the city’s population by around 10%, while having significant environmental impacts on the places it visits. According to @transportandenvironment, Europe’s luxury cruise ships emit as much toxic sulphur as 1 billion cars. When Venice banned large cruise ships, air pollution dropped by 80% (Dave Walsh 2024)
