I was listening to a lot of Doomtree. Before I was politically conscious I was still in love with the theme of prey animals defeating the predators.

The "something I like" part seems like a good thing to emphasize, too. Because it makes it less likely a miscommunication will happen.

I've done it too. Most of the time someone is just excited to have anything they relate to.

Other times the comparison is so shallow, like, "This character is green and so is this shirt I'm wearing now."

To which I'll respond, "You are correct. :)"

It's polite to know in advance whether or not the artist would enjoy that comparison. If you don't know, just compliment the art on its own merit.

A painting that means so much to me, the piece is called Temple by artist Jonathan Vair Duncan. It depicts an anthropomorphic creature in a bit of a fetal position with flames, to me it symbolizes rebirth. The illustration itself has stunning and bold strokes and colors, the figure is mainly orioles and cyans with the flame light touching certain parts and the rest of the piece is yellow and orange hues
