Over 20 bat species call San Diego home! Though often overlooked, these nocturnal mammals play a vital role in our ecosystem—especially as natural insect controllers. Using echolocation to hunt, bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. That’s pretty amazing!

Hummingbirds may look delicate, but don't let their size fool you—they are powerhouses! They can flap their wings up to 80 times per second & their hearts can beat more than 1,000 times per minute in flight. When it’s time to rest, they power down into a state called torpor to conserve energy.

You’re probably familiar with striped skunks — but have you seen their pint-sized, polka-dotted family member? Meet the Western spotted skunk! Fun fact: when threatened, these magnificent critters can do handstands before spraying to ward off predators. Talk about flair with function!

Did you know Virginia opossums are the only marsupials native to North America? They help maintain ecological balance by acting as nature’s built-in cleanup crew. They're also relatively disease-free, and it's very rare for them to carry rabies, parvovirus or distemper.

Although currently no bigger than a ballpoint pen, this adorable baby is actually a Cooper’s hawk! Each year, our Project Wildlife team cares for around 100 Cooper’s hawks who are admitted as nestlings, fledglings or adults.

Right now our medical team is giving some of the dogs who came in from the Murphy Canyon plane crash a decontamination bath. They reportedly had jet fuel on their fur.

Our medical team has suited up to decontaminate pets who may have jet fuel on their bodies after a plane crash in Murphy Canyon. Our Emergency Response Team is also deploying to the crash site right now to join our Humane Law Enforcement officers on scene.

At least 12 pets impacted by the plane crash in Murphy Canyon are arriving to our San Diego Campus. We have some reports of dogs possibly being covered on jet fuel, so our medical team will assess right away.

Our Humane Law Enforcement is helping pet owners evacuated due to a plane crash in Murphy Canyon. They are ensuring no medical attention is needed. Officers are helping with multiple dogs needing housing. Also at the evac site at Miller Elem where more evacuees are arriving.
