After five months of dedicated care at our Ramona Wildlife Center, two young mountain lions have returned to the wild where they belong. Seeing them step back into their native habitat is a feeling like no other for our Project Wildlife team.

Let’s all take a collective deep breath and soak in this moment: a majestic great-horned owl soaring off into the sunset after 127 days in our care.

We’re not crying… oh, who are we kidding — we’re sobbing! After 492 days, our beloved Slim Shady has finally been adopted! While it was bittersweet to say goodbye to one of our favorite boys, our hearts are so full knowing Slim Shady is finally home. 💙

If you are feeling a sudden surge of cuteness aggression, that is the appropriate response and, frankly, the only acceptable one when faced with this level of adorableness. Thank you, Broccoli. I think we all needed that.

We have quite the unusual patient — a tiny lesser nighthawk! This little bird was admitted on Aug. 3 and weighed just 4 grams, making them the smallest nighthawk to enter our care. Lesser nighthawks are uncommon patients for our team which makes the opportunity to help even more special.

We’re thrilled to share that more than 260 animals found loving homes during our #ClearTheShelters event! Congratulations to all the people and pets beginning their new lives together. Every adoption not only changes that animal’s life, but also opens space in our shelters for other pets in need.

Yesterday was Black Cat Appreciation Day, but we're celebrating the mysterious, majestic and delightfully dramatic black cats every day — the voids, shadows and tiny household abysses who make life more magical.

When Lupe’s foster family welcomed her into their home, they quickly realized they’d found one special pup. It soon became clear her stay wasn’t temporary — she was already home. Now, a year later, this sweet girl is living her best life, filled with sunshine and all the love she could ever want.

Over 20 bat species call San Diego home! Though often overlooked, these nocturnal mammals play a vital role in our ecosystem—especially as natural insect controllers. Using echolocation to hunt, bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. That’s pretty amazing!

Hummingbirds may look delicate, but don't let their size fool you—they are powerhouses! They can flap their wings up to 80 times per second & their hearts can beat more than 1,000 times per minute in flight. When it’s time to rest, they power down into a state called torpor to conserve energy.

You’re probably familiar with striped skunks — but have you seen their pint-sized, polka-dotted family member? Meet the Western spotted skunk! Fun fact: when threatened, these magnificent critters can do handstands before spraying to ward off predators. Talk about flair with function!

Did you know Virginia opossums are the only marsupials native to North America? They help maintain ecological balance by acting as nature’s built-in cleanup crew. They're also relatively disease-free, and it's very rare for them to carry rabies, parvovirus or distemper.

Although currently no bigger than a ballpoint pen, this adorable baby is actually a Cooper’s hawk! Each year, our Project Wildlife team cares for around 100 Cooper’s hawks who are admitted as nestlings, fledglings or adults.
