Today in 1628 the Vasa, the latest, most powerful and advanced ship in the Swedish navy set off on its maiden voyage.
After travelling about 1,300m it capsized and sank.
It was raised after 333 years on the seabed.
Today @thevasamuseum is one of my favourite places in the world.

Reconstructions reveal faces of Neolithic sisters buried 6,000 years ago 3D reconstructions reveal the faces and harsh lives of two Neolithic sisters found in a Czech mining site, hinting at ancient social inequality.

#archaeologynews Two sisters, aged 30-40, who were buried in a mine shaft 6000 years ago, with a dog and new-born baby

They were likely "interred in the shaft in which they had laboured" say the archaeologists

Why? Was this some sort of sacred site? πŸ€”

TOWER IN THE LEONINE WALLS, 848-852 CE. BORGO

The rapid construction of the walls in a big U going from the Tiber, around St Peter's, and back was in part undertaken by captive Saracens who had attempted a second sack of the extramural basilicas in 849. The materials for the construction were harvested from nearby tombs and ancient ruins, including a large number of tufo blocks from some vast now-vanished edifice. This tower in the surviving section of wall called the "Passetto" as it bore the pope's escape route from the Vatican palace to the Castel S. Angelo is notable for its reuse of ancient bricks, including entire chunks of multiple bricks (like to the right of the door). The walls were restored by Alexander VI Borgia in about 1498, hence his crest: he might be responsible for the upper storey of the wall in tufo.
