Emblem as displayed on a membership certificate from 1840
206 years ago, on the 6th of February 1820, the first 86 African American migrants sponsored by the American Colonization Society departed for what is now Liberia. The idea for the colony was rooted in the racist belief that free people of colour couldn't integrate into U.S. society. #otd #history 🗃️

A standardized price index for tulip bulb contracts, created by Earl Thompson. Thompson had no price data between February 9 and May 1, thus the shape of the decline is unknown. The tulip market is known to have collapsed abruptly in February.
More details
Wagon of Fools by Hendrik Gerritsz Pot, 1637. Haarlem weavers chase a wind-borne wagon flying a fool's cap flag. Flora, goddess of flowers, rides aboard to destruction in the sea with the vices Fraud, Gluttony and Avarice, Mrs. Mania, and Idle Hope/Fortuna.
389 years ago, on the 3rd of February 1637, tulip bulb contract prices collapsed causing the end of Tulip within the Dutch Republic. Tulip prices had shot up over 20-fold since November 12th and dropped back down to this level by May first. #otd #history 🗃️
