Just a reminder on this #TaxDay only 1 in 4 eligible people receive housing assistance. The federal housing budget is 1% of federal spending and is dwarfed by housing subsidies and tax credits to the wealthy.
Taxes filed. Doing my part so the government can gut itself (except the cops and military), scrap protections, and shovel money to billionaires. Love this cool, normal system.
Big win for Bronx tenants: after 10+ years of organizing, the City seized their slumlord’s building—the first time in 7 years. Now it’s on track for permanent affordable housing. Great reporting by @davidfbrand.bsky.social / @gothamist.com.
Going outside: highly recommended
Overall revenue up 8% from last year, factoring inflation. Meanwhile, tenants continue to get hit with annual rent hikes between 3-5%, on top of inflation. We’re long overdue for a rent freeze.
Hi everyone! I’m now a visiting fellow @nycfuture.bsky.social and looking to talk to folks about affordable housing for artists. I’ve assembled a list of housing policy/land use experts but I’d love to talk to anyone who’s worked on these kinds projects before!
hearing today in newark, nj for mahmoud khalil as the fed attempts to move jurisdiction on khalil’s case to louisiana, where he’s currently detained, from new jersey, where jurisdiction is currently held.
demonstrators plan to rally in support of khalil ahead of the hearing.
Few studies capture the brutality of NYC’s housing crisis better than this one: back in the day, countless working-class people benefited from New York’s wage premium. But, now, that same wage premium gets sucked into the black hole of our self-made housing shortage. Tragic.
If your first reaction to a deeply affordable apartment is "they don’t deserve it," I hope you never face the systemic violence of housing insecurity. But you should ask yourself why you’re so comfortable with that violence displacing others.
Proud to stand with Ms. Henderson in her fight to keep her rent-controlled home of 32 years. Family isn’t just legal paperwork. Landlords exploit loopholes to erase affordability & displace tenants.
Glad to co-counsel with @lamort.bsky.social. Thanks to @gothamist.com for the great reporting.
I get it. Whenever I dream about my dead mom being alive, my reaction is never anything heartfelt or sappy, but always just annoyed that she made everyone think she was dead this whole time!
Congrats to my colleague Jane Landry-Reyes returning 21 apartments to rent stabilization and $54,799.66 back to tenants.

Seeing these two together--in person--makes me so happy. Stevie has been supporting Leonard Peltier since the 80s. Incredible solidarity. #FreeLeonardPeltier www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iac5...
I don't think de blasio could've dreamt a better historical revision narrative. dime-a-dozen corrupt cop-landlord egomaniac descending swiftly into full-blown maga slimeball. makes de blaz look like a leftist patron saint.

Ya know the origins are situationist and I wish they’d get back to that and like hand presents to homeless people and what not
The bill shifting NYC broker fees from tenants to whoever hires the broker (usually the landlord/property manager) is becoming law after the mayor declined to sign or veto it during a 30-day window

the only reason that tech was ever remotely left-coded was that in the early 2010s they consciously aligned themselves with what appeared to be the dominant political party. that meant large donations to Dems and nominal gestures toward diversity. as soon as the winds shifted they swung right.
Housing vouchers are a central tool in the city’s efforts to solve the housing crisis.
But for many New Yorkers, the problem isn’t applying for assistance, but what comes next: finding an apartment and securing the voucher.
Spotted a Cybertruck in the wild recently. Actually not as ugly as expected, but it screams design hostility—like a truck version of anti-homeless spikes. 0/10.
