Moreover, given the likelihood of population expansion in Poland to the north of the Carpathians, it is likely that natural dispersal could occur within 10 years.

With all continuing and planned conservation actions, the European wildcat is expected to reach a Functional state in the Carpathians within a decade.

Wildcat presence is confirmed in the Carpathians, with pure wildcat individuals reported, and north of the Carpathians, with genetically confirmed hybridisation with domestic cat Felis catus.

Over the last decade, camera-trap monitoring detected several individuals resembling wildcats in the Western Beskids, but their genetic status is yet to be confirmed.

In Poland, the European wildcat is present mainly in the southeastern part of the country, but its status and population trend are unknown.

The distribution of the European wildcat is Largely Depleted in comparison to its indigenous range, with a medium recovery potential – as stated by the IUCN Green Status assessors.

The assessment on conservation potential of the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) was recently published by IUCN. Dr hab. Izabela Wierzbowska, prof. UJ, and MSc Ekaterina Rostovskaya from our Institute took part in the assessment of wildcat status.

Tropical Ecology Field Course :)

The spores fall on other insects, thus spreading a “massive zombie attack”. So far, the fungus has not been observed to turn course participants into zombies, but who knows ...

Once infected, it takes over the behaviour of the victim, forcing it to bite into a leaf. It then devours the immobilised victim from the inside, and scatters spores from the threadlike mycelium protruding outwards.

In addition to a similar climate (rain, humidity and heat) and type of environment (rainforest), in all these places our students may encounter an unusual “zombie” fungus that attacks insects.

For almost 20 years, the Jagiellonian University has been organising a tropical ecology field course for its students. We started in Venezuela and now the courses take place alternately in Borneo and Costa Rica.

It's been a busy summer for our scientists. Several of them attended the #ESEB2025 conference in Barcelona.

It is a huge enterprise that combines data from private databases, published articles, so-called grey literature, and biodiversity databases. This online dataset is a real treasure trove for future research on: biodiversity, biogeography and conservation of these extremely important organisms.

Anna Maria Łabęcka, together with numerous European freshwater bivalve researchers, has developed a comprehensive atlas of freshwater bivalve distribution in the Western Palearctic!
