yeah the practice might be more normalised in one fandom over another, depending on how old/new the fandom is and the demographics contained within it. I'd imagine new and younger fandoms might be pushing for monetisation more bc the community norms aren't as deeply rooted - but that's conjecture

It vaguely reminds me of knitters who make amazing jumpers no one could ever afford to buy from them bc of how long it takes - so knitters make the jumpers for the love of the game, and not bc anyone could ever afford their labour. To me fic is like that, too - out of love, not profit.
