The obsession with β€œstar scientists” and β€œattracting top talent” fundamentally misunderstands research and higher education.

Create a healthy environment that is attractive to all manner of scientists. Because that run of the mill, non-transformative, maybe slightly boring research matters, too.

Those same ducks apparently randomly appear & move all over our campus in NJ. I've had them appear in the floor in front of my desk & on the wainscoting in the hall right outside my office door. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason. Just a thing that happens. I choose to enjoy them

This poem is written in the shape of a Christmas tree (well, most of it is) …

Needles

I
wrote
a poem
in the shape
of a Christmas
tree but then forgot
to water it and only a few
days
later

[but the words beyond this point are scattered around the bottom of the page, like needles which have fallen from a Xmas tree)

there
were
words
all
over
the
carpet

My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, β€œScience isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

This freehand drawing of a building I imagined was def the reason I got into college (architecture school) after high school. Had a pretty bad high school GPA. It took me 3 years, started age 15 and finished age 18, and it's 10ft long. I dramatically unrolled it at my architecture school interviewπŸ˜†

Great question!

1) First and foremost, we evaluate a candidate based on the departmental guidelines and expectations provided. We don't hold the candidate to arbitrary standards, or even to those of our own institution unless asked to do so. We assess the materials against the guidelines provided.

β€œDelaying the shot from birth to 2 months, one of the potential votes for the committee, would lead to at least 1,400 infections, 300 cases of liver cancer, and 480 deaths every year – all preventable by vaccination…It would also result in more than $222m in additional healthcare costs every year.”

Many of us need to keep writing federal grants (both for political reasons and as a Hail Mary to keep people employed) despite the feeling it's a waste of time, so... if you got an NSF or NIH grant funded this year, would you mind bragging about it in the replies, so it feels like the odds are >0%?

Almost every FDA Commissioner since 1990, under Republican or Democratic presidents, ripped Prasad’s latest action to pieces; he’s a huge danger to US public health

They published their piece in the New England Journal of Medicine
