ah, well, apparently areas of the country are experiencing extreme weather I grew up preparing for!

Tornado safety: yes, bring your patio furniture in. High winds makes it more likely it'll be blown somewhere and break a window.

If you hear sirens (does VA have sirens? ooh) or get an alert...

there's this episode of 30 Rock where Larry King keeps interviewing Tracey Jordan during a financial crisis that he keeps confidently having bananas incorrect opinions about and anyway that was a lot less ridiculous than this picture

Accurate. I pretty much immediately ran through worst case scenarios in terms of the economy, foreign affairs, personal information security, civil rights (ha!), voting rights, science funding, etc

But I never could have anticipated the shoe thing and other truly startling levels of weirdness

I had a good 1 year stretch for both kids when I could sing "I like to brush it brush it" to the tune of "I like to move it" instead of yelling with much success. But prime age for that was like 4yo.... Otherwise, yeah. Same.

We recently shared a booklist for adults about rivers and how they shape our lives. And here's a booklist for kids! These books and more will help you learn more about water habitats and the creatures who live there. Link in bio.

fuck me for being this person, i guess, but public universities are a civic good and shouldn’t be run like businesses. and if you’re going to insist on running them like so, at least do some market research. students like their professors; they don’t want MOOCs taught by ChatGPT.

Not to imply that his concerns are not valid. I just think it’s important to mention that most who get degrees in astrophysics don’t ultimately use those degrees only for astrophysics research & this isn’t necessarily bad. Studying the cosmos for a while & then going to industry can be a great life

For what it’s worth, a degree in physics or astrophysics is INCREDIBLY versatile; I hope that he’s aware that even if there doesn’t end up being much federal funding for academic research (and even if he doesn’t want to go abroad) that training would make him incredibly employable in many sectors

My mom was not able to help at all but paid for a postpartum doula so I had help a few hours a few days a week which was HUGE. What an immense privilege!! But there were still long days where it was just me hobbling around trying to care for this beautiful baby & not pull my stitches & hurt myself

I am still so angry about it. He had to take vacation days and more than a week was "frowned upon" (and would have left us with no time for an actual vacation later in the year). And I know that's still better than so many

John Baker arrives under Nome's Burled Arch in Iditarod 2011! YouTube video by DarkBastion

Even though the race started in 1973, the first Inupiaq musher to win the race did so in 2011, when John Baker, Inupiaq from my hometown and friend of the family, won. I like this clip because that might be one of my family members cheering Uuuuii at the end :)

Last known survivor of 1925 Serum Run epidemic dies at 101 YouTube video by Alaska's News Source

For those who don't know the history of the Iditarod, it was started in 1973 to honor the dogs and mushers who brought diphtheria antitoxin to Nome by dogsled in 1925. The great serum run saved untold numbers of people, the last of whom died just this year.

Current Race Standings

5 days & 15 hours into the Iditarod, Jody Potts-Joseph is currently in last place, but winning isn't necessarily the goal for most people running the Iditarod. This 975 mile race is the ultimate endurance test for many of the mushers, & many use it to highlight causes.

I had to have 2 c-sections for reasons & I stayed in the hospital as long as was covered by insurance b/c it was not physically possible for me to care for my child on my own

Then I came home & just hurt a LOT while I did what had to be done b/c spouse didn't have paternity leave. It was brutal

I recall signing my c-section consent after I’d been pushing and stalled for three hours and some corner of my brain laughing hysterically (pun intended) that I was considered legally competent to consent when I was so strung out I couldn’t even read

And yet these women, in better shape, weren’t..?
