The poison frog Ameerega bilinguis jumping to escape a simulated predator. The frog is blurred as it jumps. The frog is red with yellow spots at the base of its limbs. The background is a pile of brown leaves.

We have a new paper on mimicry and behaviour in poison frogs out now in @jevbio.bsky.social πŸ§ͺ🌎
The non-toxic mimic Allobates zaparo mimics the bold behaviour of the poisonous Ameerega bilinguis, but is more likely to jump before physical contact from a predator

Detectability of a poison frog and its Batesian mimic depends on body posture and viewing angle Abstract. Aposematic signals warn predators that prey should be avoided due to dangerous secondary defences. However, as warning signals do not always prod

Our new paper on aposematism, camouflage, & mimicry in poison frogs is out! These frogs use colour for both salient signalling & crypsis but detectability & mimicry depend on viewing angle and frog behaviour. πŸ§ͺ🌎

Imperfections in transparency and mimicry do not increase predation risk for clearwing butterflies with educated predators Clearwing butterflies seemingly balance camouflage (conferred by transparent wing elements) with alternate anti-predatory strategies including warning coloration, paradoxically resulting in a diversi...

Our new paper on transparency and warning signals in clearwing butterflies is out now in Ecology & Evolution πŸŽ‰
We found that when predators are familiar with toxic butterflies the addition of bright colours to transparent wings does not reduce butterfly survival
