Close-up of a two-star system consisting of a main sequence star and a dwarf star. The dwarf star is stealing matter from the main sequence star via an accretion disk that orbits around this star at high speeds. The image is an artist’s impression of such a system.

Many of the stars in our Milky Way are part of binary systems. A good percentage of these systems are composed of two stars that orbit each other at a certain distance, but there are other binaries where both of the stars are so close that we can say they almost touch each other. #AstroSci 1/13

GOTO0650 was discovered in data from the @goto-network.bsky.social by volunteers on the @zooniverse.bsky.social platform, within 4 hours of the images being taken. An intensive follow-up campaign began immediately with AAVSO citizen scientists and Las Cumbres Observatory's 0.4m telescope network.

Public take the lead in discovery of new exploding star

Breaking my Bluesky hiatus to share that our paper on GOTO0650, the new dwarf nova discovered by Kilonova Seekers and followed up with a worldwide team of citizen scientists, was published today in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Ubiquitous Late Radio Emission from Tidal Disruption Events We present radio observations of 23 optically-discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) on timescales of about 500-3200 days post-discovery. We detect 9 new TDEs that did not have detectable radio...

NEW PAPER: I have discovered that up to half of all black holes that shred a star "burp" material years after the initial event and turn on in radio!!! No one was expecting this, and we don't really understand why this might be! 🤩🔭🧪

A stack of freshly-printed copies of my PhD thesis!

Very weird to finally be holding them in my hands! Was surprisingly heavy to carry over from the library 😅

Sad to be leaving Finland after a really fun two weeks, but equally even more excited now to move there in just under a month to start my postdoc at University of Turku!
