Can't really finish a basho without this, can we?
28.11.2025 09:21 — 👍 17 🔁 4 💬 0 📌 0The JSA board convened today and approved the takeover of Tokiwayama beya by Minatogawa oyakata (ex Takakeisho) on January 26. Some of its non-rikishi members will be moving to other heya.

Live stream of Aonishiki's Ozeki promotion ceremony is supposed to start here:

Spectators
The spectators should learn to mind their manners. There were jeers and catcalls. The spectators should respect the sumo world's combination of furious fights and moments of silence. However, the chairman noted that "each venue has its own culture and atmosphere".
(5/5)
Dame-oshi:
Some council members criticised Hoshoryu's conduct - both the dame oshi and the dangerous way he grabbed at Aonishiki at the end of their match. But the chairman says it was just a general "Hinkaku is important, let's all work on that".
(4/5)
Aonishiki:
Great work, especially considering the state of his home land. "Endeavouring and standing fast - that was splendid. Great hidden fighting spirit. We have great hopes for him"
(3/5)
The Yokozuna:
They were involved in the yusho arasoi to the last day. The YDC wishes Onosato to completely heal, and Hoshoryu to work hard.

Hear ye, Hear ye, the Words of Wisdom of the YDC
The YDC convened today, as it always does in the day after a basho, and chairman Oshima has blessed us with the following messages.

I don't think that's the story. I think it's just their fan base in Fukuoka.

23.11.2025 09:09 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0The shimpan department decided to promote Aonishiki to Ozeki.
Officially, the board has to decide that in a special meeting on Wednesday, but that's a rubber stamp - they have never voted against a promotion.
hochi.news/articles/202...
The position before the basho was clear - he would only be considered for Ozeki in January.
There is no point comparing records and precedents. This works by the shimpan department's judgement of candidate's performance and stability, not by numbers.
Shockingly, Onosato is absent day 15, giving Hoshoryu a win by default.
(The yusho depends on Aonishiki's result either way)
Apparently Onosato injured his shoulder in his match with Aonishiki on day 14.

To add to the excitement, the shimpan department is reconsidering its position about Aonishiki's Ozeki promotion this basho, and will have a meeting BEFORE tomorrow's matches, to decide on criteria for it.

Kyushu 2025, day 13 - yusho arasoi:
Makuuchi:
11-2 Onosato, Hoshoryu
10-3 Aonishiki
Given that on Day 15 the last match is always Y vs. Y (except special cases), the 9 win guys are out of the race.
Juryo:
12-1 Fujiryoga
11-2 -
10-3 Asanoyama, Hatsuyama

It should have been a monoii, though, IMO, just to make extra sure, given the importance of the match and that it was, indeed, close.
21.11.2025 17:32 — 👍 9 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0The "dead body" rule has some rules of thumb. Basically, if you fall forward, you are almost never considered "dead". If you fall backwards, as soon as your feet are both off the ground, you're dead (there are qualifications for both statements but they hold for this match).

I guess this is not known to everybody - NHK World made a change to their live website, and now their sumo highlights are available at this link as soon as the first broadcast ends (which means 17:00 UTC of the day of the actual matches).
