The EU is a colossus. So why is it cowering before Trump like a mouse? | Alexander Hurst With its woeful trade deal, Europe prostrated itself before the president. We need a leader who will tell him where to shove it, says Guardian Europe columnist Alexander Hurst

The question I've been asking myself for most of the last 9 years...

Why are people so afraid of death and bodies? Why are so many people incapable of imagining that not all cultures feel/felt the same way about these things? To be fair, mummies seem like desecration (they and their stuff were clearly meant to remain undisturbed). But dead bodies in general? Cool!

1/n Dear friends, in light of the current events in Palestine and to help spread awareness, a large number of filmmakers have made their FILMS about PALESTINE AVAILABLE FOR ONLINE FOR FREE

Below, we are sharing links to films that you can watch and share to spread our message to the world:

Incidentally, quartile ranking seems to be a really hard-to-erradicate measure. Even in the NL, many institutes want to know their Q1 percentages. We managed to shift one from Q1 journals to top quartile of citations, which is a slight improvement, but still ignores so many other factors!

Swipe right: When and why conservatives are more accepting of AI recommendations Six studies (N = 1548) and a single ad study on Facebook examine the influence of political ideology on the likelihood of accepting AI-generated recommendations in categories such as movie streaming,....

🧠 Do conservatives trust AI more?

A new study finds conservatives are more likely than liberals to accept AI-generated recommendations, especially when AI appears to know their past preferences.

A do-or-die moment for the scientific enterprise Reflecting on our paper β€œThe entities enabling scientific fraud at scale are large, resilient, and growing rapidly”

Today, our article "The entities enabling scientific fraud at scale are large, resilient, and growing rapidly" is finally published in PNAS. I hope that it proves to be a wake-up-call for the whole scientific community.

Do you mean are more MDPI journals in Q1 or Q2 or whether Q1 represents the highest or lowest quartile?

I have been photoshopping @lastweektonight.com's John Oliver with fossils in the hopes that he helps save the Paleontological Research Institution/Museum of the Earth for 100 days now. @snowqueenofhoth.bsky.social has helped almost as long. So it is time for a retrospective contest πŸ§΅β¬‡οΈ

India’s research retraction surge sparks call for reform As the country ranks third globally in life science retractions, a new national policy will penalize universities with frequent withdrawals.

β€œIt’s not a bad idea to shine the spotlight on problematic behaviour β€” and in the short term, if that means counting retractions, that’s reasonable,” he said. β€œBut eventually, India must rethink what kinds of behaviours its rankings reward.”

It would be consistent with your suggestion that national evaluation based on more than publication counts is related. The Netherlands has been pushing aggressively for alternatives to publication and citation-based assessment, for a diversity of elements, through the Recognition & Reward project.

My philosophy and experience with students is that they can almost always do incredibly difficult work, but if you ever waste their time with soul-killing meaningless work, you have essentially poisoned the well when it comes to getting them to spend any additional effort on your class.

If we did have that kind of classification, though, even for a subset of countries, I'd be happy to compare all sorts of metrics!

I'm not sure there's a central source of countries that focus on N pubs... a classification of evaluation principles by EU country would be really interesting to have/develop though!

They’re canceling the EPA for the same reason they canceled the Department of Education for the same reason they let a bunch of white Christian girls drown in a flood, which is they would rather force everyone to suffer and die than to let the wrong people benefit from having a society
