So wonderful to attend the Re-Election Kickoff of my State Senator @kristengonzalez.bsky.social. Loved listening to @abbystein.bsky.social, @dianaforqueens.com, and @sengianaris.bsky.social. We must come together to elect a coalition of socialist politicians to pass legislation across NY.

Loved being a part of @jfrejnyc.bsky.social’s Membership Assembly. Hot off the heels of electing a progressive (socialist!) mayor, we contemplated how to face the challenges of 2026. We must fight ICE and authoritarianism with joy, community building, and liberation for all.

I personally do not care about being seen—autistic people are currently very seen and incredibly stigmatized by the Trump administration. What I want is to be understood, and this collaboration demonstrates how much it matters when autistic people are heard when we speak for ourselves.

I don’t know anyone who experiences every single sign of autism that this doll does. It’s more an imperfect checklist to help people feel included.

Peer-reviewed studies suggest that about 80% of autistic girls are underdiagnosed by age 18 because they don’t fit male stereotypes.

It’s also notable that this doll is an accurate representation of an autistic girl. Virtually all representation of autistic people in popular culture is of boys and men.

Autistic behaviors, when not understood and normalized, are often treated as “quirks” or “issues” that should be “fixed.” An autistic person simply existing is refreshing. I was not expecting to see a Barbie with an AAC device.

What jumped out to me first is that the doll is not looking straight on, like other Barbies, because many autistic people struggle with maintaining eye contact. For me, it feels like looking into the sun.

Barbie partnered with @autisticadvocacy.org, a national disability rights organization run by and for Autistic Americans, in designing the doll. This fact is immediately evident in the doll’s attention to detail.

From treating autistic people as violent, exceptional at math, a punch line, or an object for the audience to take pity on, representation of autistic people in media has historically been terrible. So I was expecting the worst when I heard this announcement.

Barbie just announced its first autistic doll. I want to talk for a moment about autistic representation in popular culture. 🧵
