展覧会を鑑賞しに行った推しカプ

Moonlight, a Study at Millbank exhibited 1797 Joseph Mallord William Turner Oil paint on mahogany Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856 Turner painted this night-time view of the River Thames when he was in his early twenties. The moon is shown low in the sky, its milky glow glistening on the water as various small boats make their way to the shadowy shore. The painting depicts the view from Millbank in central London looking downriver toward the area of Nine Elms. Though the light is dim, silhouettes of distant buildings and chimneys are just visible on the opposite shoreline, juxtaposing nature's beauty with grimy industry (today, visitors looking across the river from this point will see the former Battersea Power Station). According to John Ruskin, the leading English art critic of the 19th century, the painting was 'closely studied from the real moon, and very true in expression of its glow towards the horizon.' That Turner worked from life is confirmed by his inclusion of the planet Jupiter, which shines brightly above the moon and is easily mistaken for a star. Astronomers have calculated that, given the planet's position here, the painting almost certainly records moonrise on 19 August 1796. The scene follows in the tradition of artists such as Horace Vernet, Philip de Loutherbourg and Joseph Wright of Derby, whose moonlit paintings helped fuel the eighteenth-century vogue for nocturnal subjects. Turner may also have had in mind the nocturnes of the Dutch seventeenth-century landscapist Aert van der Neer, who specialized in moonlight effects, though unlike those highly stylised compositions, the impression created here is naturalistic.
