I am putting the final touches on my session on AI for next week's @geographicalassoc.bsky.social #GAConf25. It will focus on the NEA, what preventative measures teachers could take to ensure ethical work from their cohorts, and some general T&L reflections. Hope to see you there!
12.04.2025 09:42 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 1 π 1I have also added in this piece on the controversy in Bristol over consultation plans to reduce bin services and the public response.

Makes me better that it's going to be a little more engaging and relevant to students this year! 2/2

Teaching the role of local government in regeneration is often a dry part in Changing Places (especially after looking at high-profile national projects) so I was very pleased yesterday to receive a visual guide on my council's spending overview for this year in the post. 1/2

geogmatters.substack.com is the blog showcasing the work of the Committee, publishing fortnightly, starting on Monday! We will address key issues and topics designed to support the effective teaching of A-level Geog and promote higher education pathways.
One of the questions in their investigation was on the impact of the pandemic on the high street- they started their theory using your work geogramblings.com/2020/03/31/t...

04.12.2024 21:28 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0El Nino is tricky, but this video is pretty useful explainer from @theeconomistevents.bsky.social . www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC7P...
24.11.2024 19:45 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0A shoutout to the work of the Decolonising Geography collective in producing this fantastic resource on Niger, which all students have now read: decolonisegeography.com/resources/ni...
24.11.2024 19:30 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0So we now have a couple of examples for each: North Korea as a country switched off to globalisation from a political & economic perspective and the role of colonialism and other factors in creating a detachment from globalisation for locations within countries, such as Niger.
24.11.2024 19:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is how we differentiate between the two terms.
Even on reflection, I can see how embargoes could be perceived as 'detached from' as they can sometimes be short-term and isolate countries from certain, but not all, globalisation flows.
Oracy is a strength of my department so my students engaged with it well, giving some good insights into differences in the wordplay and coming up with some clear examples of places that could be perceived as 'switched off' and 'detached from'.
24.11.2024 19:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I still like the term 'switched off' because of its application to many aspects of the spec, and, honestly, I have been teaching that terminology for over a decade now, so I will be unlikely to make an immediate swap, so I had my classes discuss the differences between the terms
24.11.2024 19:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A quick 𧡠from me on teaching 'switched off' places:
The new spec changes in the Globalisation topic have removed 'switched on/off' terminology and opted for references to detachment from globalisation instead.

23.08.2024 14:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Weβve suspected for a long time that rainfall variability increases with warming. Now, observations are long enough and of sufficient quality to prove it. Not enough rain, and then too much, exacerbates climate impacts and makes adaptation more difficult.
