Bartz v Anthropic SJ ruling.pdf

First court ruling on fair use of AI training -- training on copyrighted works is fair use, but obtaining the works from a pirated website is separately a violation

I'm happy to report that the district court just granted summary judgment to Perkins Coie in its lawsuit against the Trump administration order. It's a powerful decision, and it cites our amicus brief in support of Perkins Coie

Reminder that words matter. You canโ€™t โ€œdeportโ€ a US citizen. You might be kidnapping, disappearing, exiling, expelling, illegally removing, etc., but youโ€™re not โ€œdeportingโ€ a US citizen.

Big firms put their money over their integrity & the integrity of the law "business."
DoJ lawyers are expected to parrot their boss's words w/o regard to their obligations as to the courts.
Law has always only been partly a "profession" while also a business. But "profession" is evaporating.

I agree that generative AI firms, like OpenAi, should be accountable to humanity. This is why @polcz.bsky.social and I advocate for fractional public ownership of AGI. Our common humanity was harvested by these machines and we are each entitled to a share of it. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Re-reading Abrams v. United States for the gazillionth time to prep for class tomorrow and I had overlooked this before, or forgotten it: perhaps the most famous free speech opinion ever, the birth of the "marketplace of ideas" metaphor was... written about non-citizens.

SHARING THE ALGORITHM: THE TAX SOLUTION TO GENERATIVE AI
This article argues that tax policy offers a core tool for mitigating the sweeping public policy challenges of generative Artificial Intelligence (โ€œAIโ€).

Not sure if I count as optimistic, but hereโ€™s the thumbnail of how to share the productivity gains (potentially) created by generative AI that my coauthor @polcz.bsky.social and I presented at Columbia a few weeks ago papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Defending democracy is too expensive. So is social security and running our national parks. But it appears we have plenty of money for the government to bail out crypto investors

Thank you to @columbiauniversity.bsky.social Law School for hosting me and @polcz.bsky.social today! Weโ€™ll be presenting our research on how many of the harms of generative AI can be addressed through fractional public ownership of AI.

Financing clean technologies within Canadaโ€™s Indigenous communities: Perspectives on sustainable energy transition from practitioners and academics Indigenous communities across Canada continue to maintain significant influence on the long-term trajectory of that nationโ€™s clean energy transition. โ€ฆ

A fav thing about being a professor is when people I don't know somehow encounter my ideas and cite them. A team of scholars and activists in Canada who are working to finance renewable energy projects for indigenous communities just cited my reparations research! Solidarity across borders.

This is a suit for injunctive relief to stop the bleeding. More to come later
