The Turing Way

One of my favorite resources is the @turingway.bsky.social book.

Why? It has A TON of helpful information and the community creating the book is one of the best I've ever seen.

Stop celebrating researchers with many publications
rogue-scholar.org/records/dbgq... by @heidiseibold.bsky.social This is right on the point. One should also stop speaking of hyperprolific authors (www.nature.com/articles/d41...) In science, being prolific should not be judged by mere output. 1/

Stop celebrating researchers with many publications Researchers with >30 published research articles per year are seen as academic heros. But are they? I call on you to stop celebrating researchers with many publications.

The number of publications is an often used KPI in researcher assessment for promotions, hiring, academic prizes or more. Yet does the quantity tell a relevant story of the quality or impact of our research? I donโ€™t think so.

A cartoon tree with a bird who is an open science bird and she has woken up and is flying awaycartoon tree with a bird who is an open science bird and she has woken up and is flying away

Day1
In a quiet winter forest, a small Open Science Bird decides to build the best nest ever. Not just any nest but one built openly, so every creature can learn from it.
โ€œIf research is a nest,โ€ she chirps, โ€œthen I am building mine so everyone benefits.โ€

Day 2
She sketches her nest design and pins it to a tree trunk like a public notice board.
โ€œMaybe someone can help me improve this,โ€ she says.
A squirrel adds a clever tweak; a hedgehog suggests reinforcing the base.
The blueprint becomes better with every pawprint.

The OS bird is sad as few wind waves take few pages of blueprint away

Day 3
A sudden gust of wind snatches her blueprint, well almost!
Luckily, she has all her versions tucked safely in her pinecone-based version control system.
She smirks, โ€œHa! Try blowing away v1.1, forest.โ€

Data sharing (un)culture Everyone talks about the importance of data sharing โ€“ but do scientists really put it into practice? Our study on authors' willingness to share data gave some alarming results, particularly in theโ€ฆ

In this post, guest author Maxi shares her experience in reusing data and machine learning models. It's frustrating, because people don't share or don't even respond to a clearly "reasonable request".

Screenshot of a Nature article with the title "Pioneering CERN scheme will pay publishers more if they hit open-science targets". Header:
"The particle-physics funder will provide financial incentives to encourage practices such as data sharing and transparent peer review.". The article itself is behind a paywall.

Oh the irony...
