This striking omeshi silk kimono from the early Showa period (1926–1940) exemplifies the intersection of traditional Japanese textile arts with early 20th-century modernist design. The garment is characterized by a bold, geometric composition consisting of vertical columns and rectangular blocks. The palette is sophisticated and rhythmic, featuring alternating sections of deep forest green, warm tan, and a textured grey-blue.

The "grey-blue" sections are particularly notable for their fine horizontal striations, a hallmark of the omeshi weaving process, which uses highly twisted threads to create a crisp, durable fabric with a subtle crepe-like texture. These textured blocks contrast sharply with the solid green and tan panels, creating a sense of architectural depth and movement across the flat plane of the kimono. The overall aesthetic leans toward the avant-garde movements of the era, such as Art Deco, while maintaining the classic T-shaped silhouette of Japanese tradition.

This early Showa-period (1926–1940) silk uchikake is a technical and symbolic masterpiece, functioning as a sacred vestment for a bride's wedding journey. The garment features an elaborate paradise scene set against a dramatic black silk ground, which allows the vibrant imagery to appear ethereal and floating. The primary focal point is a pair of magnificent white cranes positioned across the upper back and shoulders; in Japanese tradition, cranes mate for life and serve as powerful symbols of marital fidelity, longevity, and good fortune.

The artisan achieved an extraordinary technical feat by maintaining seamless design continuity across the four fabric panels, an organic narrative flow that requires meticulous planning during the yuzen dyeing and painting process. The composition is further enriched with metallic couching and gold thread embroidery, adding textural depth to the kikko (tortoiseshell hexagonal) patterns that represent protection and enduring strength. Abundant floral garlands of cherry blossoms and seasonal blooms cascade down the trailing silhouette, celebrating fertility and the continuous lineage of the family. The bold arrangement and stylized natural forms evoke the decorative approach of the Rinpa school, transforming the textile into a piece of wearable art that invokes divine blessings and celestial protection.

Transphobic men, claiming to "protect women", chasing and harassing a woman on #internationalwomensday
How dare they.

A pretty good and damning summary of the far right flank of "gender critical" ideology.

So, Johnson, Farage, Badenoch, the Telegraph… howl about the UK being “an irrelevance on the world stage”.
Remind me again who decided to isolate us with a strategically and economically idiotic Brexit, relying on a trade deal with the US to save us from exactly the kind of weakness they now bemoan.

Dear Shabana,
I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank.
You said: “A party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to
make a perilous crossing on small boats.”
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton
and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government
who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division.
When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there
to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done
in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the
flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney.
As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking
points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I
filled water tanks and picked up litter.
What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop
the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country.
Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it.
It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping
migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and
croissants to refugees and food parcels.
When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She
said “we have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for
refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers
whilst risking death on the seas.”
She said “maybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on
the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when …

Dear Shabana,

Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.

Who the hell is this guy? And what does he want as a return on his £millions invested in Reform? Because it sure as shit isn’t a fairer, more progressive, equal and prosperous UK with good public services and well-regulated consumer protections.

Greens deputy leader calls for apology from Starmer over false claims that led to death threats Mothin Ali fears for his life after anti-war protest was wrongly described as being in support of Iranian regime

Starmer, Shellbrooke, Taylor should be ashamed.
Desperate, they know their time as MPs is up so they're lashing out hoping to score some political points.
@greenparty.org.uk is going to replace them!

Telegraph acknowledges Green Party has won a "seismic byelection."

And then there have been two polls this week showing us way in front of Labour and closing in on Reform?

Rattled? We're growing rapidly!
