I think Viktor was withdrawing for longer than that because of his illness and that Jayce becoming a councilor just exacerbated his self isolating tendencies. It just happened that all of this situations occured during the wrong time.

"Jayce is the oblivious one!" "Viktor is the oblivious one!" They are both oblivious and yearners and stupid, and there is a reason why in SEVEN FUCKING YEARS neither of them said anything.

He doesn't know how he gets to his place. But beyond the sense of being separate from his flesh, he is sure of something.

Viktor will not forget him that easily. That's not an option. It never was.

He just has to bring him back to him.

But Sky's expression tells him enough.

And Jayce feels as his whole world crumbles apart in less than 10 seconds.

"I'm sorry." She offers. Meek. Hugging herself.

But Jayce doesn't need apologies, nor pity. He doesn't know what he needs.

And something shifts in him. Breaks.

"His lungs." She murmurs, opening one of the books to a specific page. "It wasn't Grey."

When Jayce reads what's there, he drops the rest of the books. Hands numb. Face staticy.

"No." He mutters. In denial.

He hopes this *is* a nightmare.

"Do what." He hisses, impatient.

Sky clamps her mouth shut, and then she closes her eyes, trembling in defeat. She goes behind her desk, and pulls up a bunch of books, handing them to him.

They are books about curses. And magically based conditions.

Jayce doesn't let it, he prods. He is insistent, and Sky just acts more and more guilty. Looking at him with a pity in her eyes.

"It's like he doesn't even remember me."

"I told him- Jayce, you have to believe me. I tried to stop him from doing it."

When he leaves, Jayce thinks he is spiraling. That perhaps he did hit his head. But nothing happens, and so instead, he goes directly to Sky.

He corners her, Jayce knows she has information about this. And when he finds her, she panics, and tries to end the conversation fast.

Viktor doesn't stay, no matter how much he begs him. No matter how many questions he asks, or what he says. No matter how many times he asks for forgiveness. The more words come out of his mouth, the more unsettled Viktor seems.

It's a nightmare. Viktor is dettached from him.

And that's when Jayce notices how well he is breathing, how there is no cough. How his eyebags have smoothed out. And the color of his skin become more lively.

Viktor takes him to the nurse station in the Academy, sure that he has a concussion. And Jayce is dragged there only half present.

And Jayce starts panicking, because Viktor is acting as if he is a stranger. There is no petiness behind his words. None of that mean-intendedness that Viktor is very bad at hiding. He has never been a good liar, always letting Jayce handle interactions with people he actively disliked.

Jayce thinks he is mocking him. That he has to be.

But Viktor's confusion turns into worry, and his tone becomes tentative and soft. Asking him if he is okay, if he needs him to call someone. If he knows where he is. Who he is talking to.

"Maybe you slipped and hit your head."

But Viktor just looks confused, and slightly afraid. He calls him *councilor* with a stuttered and leveled voice. So different to the way Jayce is used to Viktor refering to him. None of that sweet and warmth familiarity that almost no one else in his life had with him.

"Where were you?"
"Why did you send me that?"
"Why did you disappear without telling me?"
"How dare you abandon *our* dream so callously?"

All trembling words within raised voices and coated with the sting of his eyes as he fights tears back. Uncaring of the audience that has started to gather.

three days of having to catch up to his responsibilities, he finally sees him. And Jayce- well, Jayce sees red. He storms up to him in the middle of a busy hallway.

Unthinking, he confronts him right there. Pained shouts mixed with begs of explanations.

A few days later, Jayce is flabbergasted when he recieves the letter, and, as predicted, storms into the lab, only to find it empty. He looks for Viktor everywhere.

I'm thinking alot about "bad ending" hanahaki disease. Viktor, after getting his diagnosis, knows that is terminal, and he has to make a decision. Tell Jayce in the small chance that he reciprocates, or get the operation that removes the growths, and forget about him completely.
