Whenever someone is blatantly prejudiced against one group (e.g., Stoller’s longstanding Sinophobia), you know it’s only a matter of time before he turns against other groups

When I tell my students we’re going to discuss the ethics of AI in class, they often assume we’ll be talking about plagiarism and academic integrity. And we do, eventually. But we start here: the illusion of seamless computer magic is built on worker exploitation.

OSU trustees' hasty actions, secrecy casts shadow on new president | Our View Ohio State University’s Board of Trustees undermined public trust by hastily appointing a new president after Ted Carter’s scandal‑tinged resignation.

Good oped from @dispatch.com: “The appointment of the third new president in five years is a Band-Aid over a wound that the OSU Board of Trustees still must heal. The move to fill the position seems inexplicably rushed, considering that Carter was essentially forced to resign less than a week ago…”

The Washington Post @washingtonpost.com • 9m Two people were injured after a gunman opened fire inside a campus building at Old Dominion University in Virginia, according to officials. The
gunman is dead. Arieh Kovler • @ariehkovler.com • 34m Watching local media on the ground at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, near Detroit. Huge police presence. Reports that a car rammed into the building before shooting started. The synagogue
complex includes a daycare for pre-school age. No further details.

Most countries in the world: What's a mass shooting?

United States, today: Which mass shooting are you talking about?

As a member of a different Reform

Really cannot think of a better argument for the importance of becoming a dues-paying member of @aaup.org than the last week at Ohio State - our only hope to have faculty, staff, and student voices heard is if we organize

Photograph of seven faculty members outside the board of trustees meeting where the new president was announced.

Our members, on and off the board, showing up this morning at the OSU board of trustees event announcing Ravi Bellamkonda as the new president. We spoke to the media about our extreme disappointment with the process and repeated our call for a more transparent, inclusive, and democratic university.

It's so wild to me Ohio State has the same institutional problems it did when I was a student there 10+ years ago. Obviously this is by design, but I still feel whiplash reading things like this

The rushed selection of Ohio State University’s new president forgoes principles of shared governance and ignores input from faculty, staff & students.

AAUP-OSU Statement on the Selection of Provost Ravi Bellamkonda as Permanent OSU President

We are surprised and disappointed at the Board of Trustees’ decision to choose a new permanent university president without even consulting faculty, staff, and students. Ohio State’s system of shared governance - not to mention best practices in hiring university presidents - requires all of us having a say in the process. This hasty, undemocratic process starts this presidency on the wrong footing and sends the wrong message about our supposed shared values. The speed and secretiveness of this selection follows a troubling pattern of institutional entitlement. The last few years at Ohio State under Ted Carter have been characterized by mass arrests, a chilling of free speech, allegations of covering up abuse, and now corruption. Why risk more public mistrust when OSU is already constantly in the news for the wrong reasons and there has been so much reputational harm? Now is the time to be more careful with decision-making and more accountable, not less. In just the past two days, over 700 people–faculty, staff, students, alumni, as well as community members–signed our petition calling for a presidential search committee that reflects the democratic structure of the University Senate. That demand to be heard still stands. Going forward, we will continue to work to make sure that OSU faculty and others actually have a voice. This rushed process has given us no time to consider or discuss the merits of Provost Bellamkonda’s elevation to the presidency, but we wish him well and hope for a successful presidency. If the new president wants to win the trust of the community, he should take immediate action to show that he represents a new era - repeal Ted Carter’s anti-free speech policies, listen to abuse survivors, and commit to greater transparency and authentic shared governance going forward.

And just like that, a new permanent OSU president!

Please read & circulate our statement.

We will continue to be active in creating space for the voices of faculty & the university community. We invite all faculty to join the chapter & all who want transparency & inclusion to work with us.

The trustees deciding to appoint a new permanent, not-interim Ohio State University president with zero input from faculty, staff, and students is bad, regardless of whom they picked. Bellamkonda is going to have an uphill battle to win the trust of all the people who had no say in his selection.

Well that didn’t take long to leak: “NBC4 confirmed through two sources on Wednesday night that the university will elevate Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda to become its 18th full-time president.”

Ohio school board member resigns following our questions about his social media posts denying the Holocaust Social media posts reviewed by The Buckeye Flame show a now-former Little Miami board member denying the Holocaust and supporting Hitler before voting to remove anti-hate poster.

One of the school board members who voted to remove a “Hate Has No Home Here” poster is literally a Nazi

“People not on the [Jews’] payroll know that the U.S. fought on the wrong side of [World War 2],” Smith posted on Threads on Nov. 28, after he was elected to the Little Miami Board of Education.

The article says “The university has not indicated who will take the helm, or whether they will serve in an interim or full-time appointment” but many of the candidates they mention would only make sense as non-interim replacements

Best rundown I’ve seen of the likely candidates for next OSU president. Seems like decision has been made to pick a permanent replacement for Carter without any input from outside the trustees, which is bad whoever they pick. Wonder if the choice will leak before tomorrow morning.

This is such embarrassing corruption - whoever becomes the next leader of Ohio State will need to take dramatic action to show their independence from this swampy self-dealing or they will be presumptively complicit and illegitimate
