Side 6 Soundwaves was my companion listening during the airing of GQuuuuuuX. I also listened to the discussions on the First Gundam novel trilogy; nothing too specific to GQ but a neat listen.

Hiroyuki Okiura, whom Watanabe enlisted to direct the opening of the Cowboy Bebop movies, employs a similar technique to establish verisimilitude. Don't know what we're talking about? Ask DNA. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHNw...
Macross Plus has a great sense of place; Eden feels so lived-in. It’s a testament to the team at Triangle Staff that this alien world is so well-realized. As he often does, Watanabe relies on montages of establishing shots to establish realism.

He’s got some deeper cuts, too. During an interview Watanabe got to talking about John Carpenter’s Dark Star (1974). He said, “It’s a very dumb movie, so please check it out.” Brilliant.
Of course, if you’ve seen Cowboy Bebop, you know how much Watanabe loves westerns, noir, science fiction, samurai stories, and kung-fu flicks. He has cited The Killers (1946), The Wild Bunch (1961), Dirty Harry (1971), and The French Connection (1971) as personal favorites.
Fun fact: Shinichirō Watanabe is a cinephile, first and foremost—his love of film oozes out of every frame of animation he touches. As he puts it, “I constantly think how it will be interesting, exciting, or unique if we can combine and mix genre A and B.”
