*Worth pointing out that YAS did corrections on episode 32 (and maybe 33) of First Gundam. He was hospitalized early in the production of 34, which he was animation director for.

Of course, YAS also reimagined the events of First Gundam in Mobile Suit Gundam: Origin, which ran in Gundam Ace from 2001 to 2011 and was collected in 12 volumes. He also co-directed the OVA.

Fortunately, Yasuhiko recovered. He had—and continues to have—a long and storied career in the animation industry. Relevant to Gundam, he returned to work on the film trilogy (1981-82) and did the character designs for Zeta (1985), F91 (1991), and Unicorn (2010-14).

Without Yasuhiko’s guiding hand, Tomino and the team did the best they could with limited time and resources to give Gundam a solid, albeit abbreviated, conclusion.

Not-So-Fun-Fact: “A Decoy in Space,” ep. 31 of Mobile Suit Gundam, was Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's last credited episode*. He contracted pleurisy (which he initially mistook as a heart attack) and was hospitalized for the remainder of the production.

Encounters in Space is a real treat for UC sickos. It introduces players to the Thoroughbred, a Pegasus-class battleship first mentioned in the second Gundam novel. Bandai released a three-volume manga called Space, To the End of A Flash, to accompany the game, featuring the Thoroughbred crew.

Fun fact: Encounters in Space, the follow-up to Journey to Jaburo, came out in 2003 for the PS2. It covers the final third of 0079 and features approx. 60 minutes of new animation. Unlike its predecessor, it’s a more on-rails experience. Which game do you prefer?
